A Deadly Month for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan
RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr. July 20, 2009
KABUL, Afghanistan Four American soldiers were killed by a roadside explosion in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, making July the deadliest month for American service members in the country since the 2001 invasion and underscoring the frightening rise in the sophistication and accuracy of roadside bombs.
With the four newest fatalities, at least 30 Americans have died in the first three weeks of July, surpassing the highest previous monthly toll, 28, reached in June 2008.
Part of the reason for Julys sharply higher fatalities for American troops and for British and other NATO forces is the three-week-old offensive in opium-rich Helmand Province, where United States Marines and British soldiers are trying to take control of areas dominated by the Taliban.
But the most significant factor is the increasing power of roadside bombs employed by guerrillas in eastern and southern Afghanistan, including Helmand.

Sounds like we have one right here?
They were anti-Bush rather than anti-war.
The Anti war supporters now support the war. Flip floppers.
Duh, war’s good if there’s a ‘D’ next to the guy’s name. O-BA-MA! O-BA-MA! YES WE CAN!
The other reason is the new Rules of Engagement the the WH has instituted. It is killing our soldiers just like it did in Nam.
Pray for America
they were never anti-war just anti-bush.
They are not anti-war protestors. They are actually anti-IRAQ War protestors.
It’s only an evil war if a Republican presides over one.
They are only against the two and three syllable Wars.
Give them four syllables and they are good to go.
It can get expensive, it is Tokyo. It’s in the Shiodome area, right next to Ginza. Gordon Ramsay has a restaurant in there. It’s okay. Good for breakfast, thats about it.
I don’t do street meat (food period) but Tokyo to me is safe eating.
You grab a drink at the Park Hyatt where they filmed “Lost in Translation”? Great view of the City at night.
A fairly good question, actually. Every Friday without fail there were the usual gaggle of sanctimonious idiots on a peace vigil in the town square. Suddenly they aren’t there anymore! I know - they’re all off toasting Bush and the victory in Iraq, right? Right?
The anti-war protestors are sitting in cafés drinking their lattés congratulating themselves on ending the war(s). They aren’t very bright or intelligent, so if the news personalities aren’t screaming about the war(s) 24/7, then Obama must’ve pulled us out.
The few true anti-war protestors (the ones who actually really believe) are still out their picketing Walter Reed... Well, I don’t know if they’re still there, but I haven’t read anything in the news lately about them... Catch the irony?
Really interesting how those cowardly hypocrites have a change of thought depending on who is in power.
They went back to central casting to hangout with the homeless.
They won’t be needed until another republican is in power.
It’s better to have a war under the Socialist Banner....didn’t you guys knows this?
You hit it correctly, those Guys are in trouble and need out Prayers and Support.
Excuse me not out, our, I did use spell check.
But then again maybe it should be out.
Just for the record, Canada also suffered several casualties in July along with the Brits and Americans and lumping us in with ‘THE OTHER’ NATO countries who have non combat roles is a gross insult by the NY Times.

Vets for peace protested the Afghanistan war in our 4th of July parade here in Bangor. The media left it alone. They are out there and have been protesting since shortly after 9/11. The media chooses to ignore them since Bush has left office.
