Make mine malaise (The attempt to rehabilitate Jimmy Carter)
Washington Times ^ | July 20, 2009 | Steven Hayward

Posted on 07/20/2009 6:11:06 AM PDT by La Lydia

More than a few observers have pointed out that President Obama and the Democrats in Congress seem determined to repeat the errors of the 1970s by returning to inflationary spending, tax increases, auto company bailouts and cuts to the defense budget while coddling dictators who hate America....So it was inevitable that this recycling effort would get around to attempting the most brazen rehabilitation of all: Jimmy Carter was a visionary president!...It was 30 years ago this month that Mr. Carter reached the nadir of his presidency with his famous "malaise" speech in which he criticized the American people for their materialism and "crisis of confidence." ...

Today the malaise speech is being revived as a totem of Mr. Carter's unrecognized greatness and profundity. Writing a few days ago in the New York Times, Gordon Stewart, one of Mr. Carter's speechwriters, argued that "the speech was extremely popular" at the time, which is not entirely wrong. Initial polls showed positive public response, but it wilted within days. Mr. Stewart thinks this was because "it was just too hard to compete with Ronald Reagan and his banner of limitless American consumption."...

In the midst of an energy crisis that was largely the result of bad government policy, Mr. Carter embraced the "limits to growth" mentality at the core of modern environmentalism...Carter resisted every change in policy that would have ended the energy crisis (such as decontrolling energy markets) and indeed made the problem worse over the long run by locking up huge oil and gas reserves...

Not a good sign when they start comparing you to Carter, a weak president who became a major nutcake upon leaving office.

And with double-digit unemployment, double-digit interest rates and double-digit inflation by 2012;
Hussein will just be another Jimmy Carter...”one & done!”

Of course, we're gonna have one hell of a mess to clean up in 2013.
But what else is new. We've been cleaning up ‘Rat messes for decades!

Will American voters ever learn...doubtful!

And don't forget the whole Iran thing, another Carter consequence we are still living with. And his weakness when faced with the Kremlin.

But you have raised an interesting point. Once they dismantle our health care system and establish a state-run entitlement, it is going to be very difficult to clean up that mess.

"...unrecognized greatness," was 21 1/2 percent interest.
$.85 gasoline in 1979 was more expensive than $4.00 gasoline in 2008. Think about it.

Any idea what the line is in Las Vegas these days on Obama completing even one term? I have no idea where to look for such things but I'm pretty sure there is someone setting the odds for just such a possibility!

I “think” “Obamacare” & “Cap & Tax” are both D.O.A. in the Senate.

Healthcare will never pass — they lost their opportunity when the information of what is in the plan became public and the Blue Dog Democrats finally figured out if they want re-elected they had better tell Pelosi NO!

I so hope you are right. At some point, members of Congress take a deep breath and remember they have to run for re-election.

The Washington Post this morning had a huge, unflattering picture of Obama on the front page above the fold, to go along with the story that his poll numbers are plummeting. I wondered briefly if the Post has finally turned on him. Probably not, but even the Post is forced to notice that many people believe the Emperor has no clothes.

Exteremely visionary, if you like long gas lines, double digit inflations and unemployment, a weak defense, getting pushed around by terrorists......oh the great vision of Jimmy Carter. The only thing good about Carter is it open the door wide open for Reagan.

Carter’s greatness is goes unrecognized because He is the second or third worst president of the twentieth century.

But I will agree that Carter is a profound idiot.

Won’t get through the Senate if it does pass the House and after visiting back in their Districts/States in August, it is a dead duck.

We need to keep every bit of pressure on that we can.

“At some point, members of Congress take a deep breath and remember they have to run for re-election.”

BINGO!

And that is exactly why the “Blue-Dog” Democrats will NOT vote for either bill in the Senate.

The funny part is that they are comparing Carter and Obama NOW, when they have been the same all along! Hell, Obama has been giving an “American malaise” speech in every D@MN country he travels to! He has kowtowed to every D@MN dictator on the planet! He blames all HIS failures on the past just like Carter blamed Nixon!

Last year I told everyone that would listen that Obama was like Carter 0.2beta! The same crap, only in a prettier package!
