Black Chamber head slams Boxer words as 'racial,' 'condescending' and 'God awful'

The President and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) tore into Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) Thursday for what he said were "condescending" and "God awful" racial statements at a hearing.

NBCC head Harry C. Alford took strong exception to Boxer having referenced an NAACP report favoring climate change legislation during a hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which Boxer is the chairwoman.

"Madam chair, that is condescending to me," Alford said. "I'm the National Black Chamber of Commerce, and you're trying to put up some other black group to pit against me."

Boxer defended including the report, however, saying the report reflects a "diversity" of support behind climate change legislation facing the Senate.

"If this gentleman were here, he would be proud he's being quoted," Boxer said in defense of the NAACP support.

Alford, however, struck back against Boxer, accusing her of "getting racial" in the climate change debate.

"All that's condescending, and I don't like it. It's racial. I take offense to it. As an African-American and a veteran of this country, I take offense to that," he said. "You're quoting some other black man — why don't you quote some other Asian or some other… You're getting racial here."

"You're speaking on behalf of the black community?" Alford asked. "Why are you doing the colored people association's study with the black Chamber of Commerce?"

He finally concluded:

"We've been looking at energy policy since 1996. And we are referring to the experts, regardless of their color. And for someone to tell me, an African-American, college-education veteran of the United States Army, that I must contend with some other "black group" and put aside everything else in here —

This has NOTHING to do with the NAACP, and really has nothing to do with the National Black Chamber of Commerce. We're talking about energy. And that — that road the chair went down, I think is God awful."

HARRY C. ALFORD, President & CEO
National Black Chamber of Commerce

In less than a decade, NBCC President, CEO and co-founder Harry Alford has established himself as perhaps the nation's preeminent champion of African-American business empowerment. From a visionary concept of what Blacks need to do to fully seize their place in the economic mainstream, Mr. Alford has built a global organization that has earned a place at the table in the White House and at the top levels of Corporate America.

As the intellectual and spiritual linchpin of the NBCC, Mr. Alford has been responsible for opening doors that have led to billions of dollars in new business for Black-owned businesses throughout the nation. His relentless energy and advocacy is helping forge international business opportunities for African-Americans and emerging entrepreneurs in Africa, the Caribbean, South America and the rest of the Black Diaspora. For this work he was recently named a cultural Ambassador by the United States State Department.

A native of California, Mr. Alford has made his mark at the highest levels of both the private and public sectors. After earning top honors as Company Commander in the Army's Officer Candidate School class, Mr. Alford put his leadership skills to work in a series of key sales and executive positions at Fortune 100 companies such as Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson and the Sara Lee Corporation.

In the public sector, Mr. Alford made a dramatic impression as the minority business development point person in Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh's administration. In less than two years, increased minority business participation at the State level by more than 500 percent - a feat never before nor since accomplished. For that achievement and others, he was named The US Department of Commerce's Region 5 Minority Business Advocate of the Year for 1991. In October 1996, The African Americans for Corporate Responsibility of New York honored Mr. Alford for his successes in minority business development. More recently, Fortune Small Business magazine ranked Mr. Alford #5 on its "Power 30" list of Washington, D.C.'s most influential small business advocates.

Mr. Alford writes weekly business columns for the National Newspaper Publishers Association's members across the country and consults and speaks on this matter to groups and agencies throughout the nation. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the United States Chamber of Commerce and is currently a member of the National Advisory Council, Small Business Administration and also serves on the Board of Directors for Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). As a consultant, he has developed business models tailored to specific corporations and public agencies.

Mr. Alford is regularly called upon by Congress to testify on various legislative initiatives related to small business development, e-commerce, health care, social security reform, tax reform and global trade issues. He has delivered key testimony, for example, on the ongoing debate over the Kyoto Protocol.

During his presentation, Mr. Alford argued that Black businesses in America and those in developing nations would suffer disproportionately if the United States agreed to adopt many provisions of the Kyoto Protocol.

Mr. and Mrs. Alford reside in Maryland with their college student/athlete sons.

The way Boxer spoke to and treated this MAN was as if she had addressed hm repeatedly as ‘boy’, her democrat boy to put in his place and not question his masters. Disgusting!

It appears as though Mr. Alford "gets it". Kyoto sucks.

Mr. Alford was absolutely right in his assessment of the arrogant Boxer and right in his call for Boxer to be recalled. How would that recall be initiated?

Barbara Boxer is plain stupid. She would not have had an inkling that what she was doing would be seen as offensive.

In her mind the NAACP speaks for black folks, this was a black man, and he was off the plantation, and he was singing from the wrong hymnal to boot. In her mind, she assumed that he was lost and she thought she was doing him a kindness to point out that he was lost and had the wrong hymnal with him. I’m sure she was shocked and surprised at his reaction.

As I said, she’s just plain dumb. As dumb as they come.

She could’ve cared less about his reaction,
or anything he had to offer. She was going
to pound her points .. no matter what .. the
arrogant, racist, evil witch.

But I get the sense that she played her
liberal snarky game with the wrong person.

Senators and Congressmen cannot be recalled. They can only be removed by their peers, either the Senate or House as is appropriate. I can’t recall any Senator who has been thrown out but Adam Clayton Powell, Crook NYC was once.

Boxer's arrogance in this video are stunning! The problem is simply that the UNITED STATES Senate is dominated by an ethnic group that comprises less than 2% of the total American population, is extremely liberal, extremely rich and is concentrated in one party. Talk about a dictatorial elite! Something seriously wrong with this kind of charade government. Harry's problem is that there is currently ONE black Senator in the chamber today (and he's not seeking election).

How can this happen in the United States!
