Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today ordered that 15 percent of California's motor vehicle fleet be sold in a massive "garage sale," declaring he wants to clean up potential "abuse of taxpayer dollars" including allowing certain employees to take state vehicles home.
The governor said order resulted from disclosures to a newly created "Waste Watchers Website." The complaints detailed allegations that some workers were storing state vehicles at home without apparent justification.
"Today I am taking action to get rid of waste and abuse in the state's vehicle fleet...eliminate all wasteful home storage permits, and sell surplus cars at our state garage sale next month." Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "I want to thank all the vigilant Californians who have submitted concerns on the Waste Watchers Web site. My staff will continue to review your submissions to ensure state government operates efficiently and is accountable to the people."
The state Department of General Services reported that the vehicle selloff could save the state $24.1 million over the next year.
Under the governor's order, the state will identify every light duty vehicle under 8,500 pounds and determine which state employees are required to use the vehicles in their official duties. The governor's plan would then reduce by 20 percent the number of workers who are allowed to store state vehicles at home.

A CalTrans Truck!
State should purchase Hummers. It was cheaper than Limo’s for the parties.
(sarc off)
Very smooth Arnold. Saved 24 million. Only 20 billion to go.
Can we sell the legislators to China
ROFL!
We’re going to a bar-b-que tomorrow...that joke is coming with me
Nero fiddles while Rome burns. An empty, populist gesture that does not solve the immense structural liabilities of social programs. Kind of like on the federal level you sell off excess furniture while not addressing Social Security, Medicare entitlements. Meaningless pablum. But at least it does spread some pain into the public sector employees. That’s the populist angle after all.
If he had done this the first week he was in office, he’d still be popular.
Look Arnie.... just tell the five suckup RINOS to go home and tell the DUMBOCRATS to go pound sand. When all concern are hungry, then call a new meeting.
Too late, China has already bought them. Just search for articles on the ‘net where our legislators and governor have trekked to China to kowtow. You’ll see.
Seems to me that the people’s vote in May is forcing the governor to do what he should have been doing all along. Cut out the fat, governor. Then you talk about tax increases.
Second to the last paragraph:
removing “higher polluting vehicles from the state fleet and replacing them with newer, more fuel efficient models.”
So they are really just going to buy new cars!!!
Dang! There goes my 4WD dump truck with a winch. C'mon, State Parks has GOT to have a few extra!
My thought too - an excuse to buy new vehicles. My dad is a body man and when I asked him how business was doing, he explained many local municipalities are bringing vehicles in for rust and maintenance work to keep them on the road.
Will he get the $4,500 casher for clunker money?
My thought as well. Probably going to buy some vehicles from Obama’s Government Motors.
