PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - The U.S. government will get tough with governments that don't live up to trade deals, including those with substandard labor practices, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk was set to announce on Thursday.
The USTR and U.S. Labor and State departments will identify and investigate labor violations in countries with which it has free trade agreements and insist problems are fixed, instead of waiting for complaints to initiate enforcement, according to prepared remarks.
"If they won't fix their labor problems, we will exercise our legal options," Kirk was set to say in a speech at a U.S. Steel Corp plant in a city where leaders from the G20 group of nations will meet in September to discuss the sagging global economy.

The list, ping
I wonder how many countries will start laughing at the US trade rep. There are so many problems, and this is what they are focusing on. In my opinion, this is a way to bolster unions around the world. What a bunch of communists!
They laugh at us now. Worse than communists. Fascists. Violent too.
There’s no rhyme or reason to any of this. It’s another Carteresque move sure to anger more of our allies around the planet.
If we could just get Barry to insult our enemies even 1/10th as much as he insults our friends.
Oh yes there is. This is payback to big labor for being their "muscle".
Nachum, I don’t disagree in total. I’m just not convinced this guy would be loyal to anyone, support or not.
The one constant, is taking down the U.S. by any means possible. I’m sure you’ve seen what he’s doing, and at least IMO, it’s a paint by numbers book on total destruction.
and that don’t count as meddling?
Oh yes, this is intentional. It is textbook anarchy cook book stuff. As everything falls apart, they take control. They also know their time is limited. They have to move as quickly as possible.
I agree. A point in your favor on the last comment I made, is that the unions figure heavily in the new G.M., so you do have some things on your side with your comments re: unions.
Wish I didn't.
Me too...
I could never fathom agreeing with any of Obama's boot lickers, until now!
I am sooo fed up with everything I am buying been made in China.I want things made in USA, Germany,Swiss,Russia,Italy,Japan even France not in China damn it!...and no, I do not want to go to specialty stores to find things NOT made in China.
For the longest time, I wanted someone in the US Government to tell China, if you sell a Dollar's worth of merchandise to us, we need to balance it by selling Dollar's worth back to China no strings attached.
When the Chinamen are paying 10 cents an hour for the very line of work an American worker is getting paid 10 Dollars an hour, how the hell can you compete with that.(quality of the product set aside mind you)
Now, if you call that protectionism so be it, but in my book, that's the way i see it, and I am sticking to it!
BTW do not give me the BS of China selling us their crap and then turning around and buying/investing back in our worthless bonds to prop up our careless and unsustainable life style.
This is a recipe for economic disater and as of now, we are just getting the taste of it.
Stay tuned...more to come this Fall...
