California is going to have to cut their state spending by a very large percentage before any bailout.

I don’t believe we should pay either. Let the other states deal with their shortfalls. I believe the article I saw was in the Houston Chronicle recently. The Unemployment Fund in TX will be broke by October 2009 to the tune of $400+ million (which seems like chump change these days) I only found something from a Lubbock TX news agency. Now I want to know where that surplus went to. I keep my house in order, why can’t other government agencies do the same?

If a bailout is constitutionally executed, I think it would need about 50 senators to put their necks on the line for Barbara Boxer and Feinstein.

I don't think that will happen. Boxer is too annoying.

I can see Obama steering pork their way, but not much else. He wins California in 2012 regardless. They have the Latino vote wrapped up. Cali can turn into a slum and O wins anyway.

I think that’s an overreaction. Especially for today’s 20 something soldier.

“I know many who lost jobs and enlisted with sponsored programs to be educated and retrained with no jobs to fill at the end of the course that are flippin’ burgers at Mickey Dee’s and losing their homes as we speak.”

Right here! Husband worked for 27 years with a textile plant as a robotics arm technician and our entire economy in a 50 mile radius is shot. He went to school under NAFTA and became a certified welder but he literally can’t get a job at McDonalds because everyone else of the 2400 people that this MANUFACTURING town has is fighting over jobs that are declining because no one has money to buy anything and the cycle just goes on and on. Most can’t afford to move as they were stable income wise, but not enough put back to survive for several years. We have looked into welding jobs and found some in Texas for $7 an hour. We are also trying to get a vehicle together to interview in Kentucky if that position is still open. But it’s hard to pay to move for $7 an hour entry level. Especially when rent THERE would be three times as much as our mortgage here because of the equity. And selling obviously isn’t much of an option.

The problem is that it sounded like a real good idea to move ‘dumb’ jobs to third world countries, and IT jobs to India but there was nothing but incentive for the corporations and the people who were supposed to be so grateful for ‘cheap’ goods has no money left to buy ANY goods that aren’t necessary. No matter how cheap.

I know capitalism works, and I know it’s not the “job” of the government to provide jobs. But that same should be said when that they should not be able to ENCOURAGE jobs to leave the country either.

We should be focusing on educating high level technical people in areas like science/medicine, so we have something that the rest of the world needs from us. Unfortunately, Democrat control in the Chicago area has given us a mediocre education system. It appears they don’t want educated people, they prefer to keep their voting base.

While you are right about educating people, you assume that all people are capable of obtaining a higher education.

I’m sorry, not everyone can handle college material and we can’t just say “Well, sorry you have a low IQ. You’ll have to starve even though you are willing to do manual work, we’d rather have THOSE people do that.”

There will always be need for mechanics, plumbers, etc.—people need to keep their cars and toilets running! My personal experience is that the kids graduating from college are unemployed or underemployed while those with a trade seem to be working. Obama is promoting the new “green” jobs—people to work on the windmills and such. No college degree required. My feeling is we need to emphasize areas such as medical research, but nationalizing the healthcare system will have a negative affect.

I have a serious question: If the dollar undergoes a collapse, with what will we buy foreign oil?

The dollar will sink so low that we’re going to see people using money to keep warm. Or, we’ll replace the dollar with a foreign currency, like China.
