AND JUSTICE FOR ALL
AG MAKES EQUAL RIGHTS PRIORITY

Attorney General Eric Holder yesterday assured the NAACP that the Justice Department was back in business, but said the law can't go as far as personal responsibility.
In a speech before the nation's oldest and largest civil-rights group, Holder said the federal government would pick up a mantle he claimed was largely ignored during the Bush years.
"I can proudly report the civil-rights division is back and it's open for business," Holder said at the New York Hilton, to raucous applause. "But changing the law can only create a path -- it cannot bring us to our final destination.
"The goal of full equality cannot be mandated by the government or achieved by the courts alone. To reach this goal, all of us must take responsibility for ourselves, for our choices and for our futures."
He added, "We must resist the temptation to conclude that our nation has fulfilled its promise of full equality based on one moment or on one election. We know better than that . . . We still have work to do."
Holder avoided any mention of a possible criminal investigation of Bush administration officials over alleged torture tactics abroad. Instead, the attorney general focused on the role of the Justice Department in closing the equal-protection gap.
"Our laws can guarantee that every child has equal access to an education," Holder said. "But access alone cannot make a child pick up a book. That is the responsibility of every parent."

While the NAACP will host its centennial convention at the New York Hilton Hotel, where President Obama is scheduled to attend on the last day of the six-day conference, supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal, a journalist and activist on death row since 1982, will hold a press conference at the hotel to shed light on Abu-Jamals case at 10 a.m. on July 13.
Elected officials, activists and organizations are expected to join the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition (NYC) there. They will also convene at 6 oclock that evening.
