Obama says lost auto jobs are gone Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:36pm EDT
By David Alexander
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama took a dose of reality to Michigan on Tuesday, saying that thousands of jobs lost to the auto industry's downturn are not coming back and it is time to prepare for new industries.
Traveling to Michigan, a state hit hard by job losses as Detroit's Big Three automakers have reeled from the U.S. recession, Obama planned to promote a $12 billion initiative to boost community colleges and increase the graduation rate.
"(The) hard truth is that some of the jobs that have been lost in the auto industry and elsewhere won't be coming back," Obama was to say, according to prepared remarks released by the White House.
"They are casualties of a changing economy. And that only underscores the importance of generating new businesses and industries to replace the ones we've lost, and of preparing our workers to fill the jobs they create," Obama will say.

“The auto plants are gone Michigan, but I give you my word that the union mentality you helped to forge here will always be with you!”
Didn’t John Mccain say the say thing during his campaign?
OH well, too bad for all those loyal union members.
And yet, the union bosses seem to be doing allright for themselves.
BTW, so did the A-holes in Virginia. Don't thank me.
He’s stalling.
Yet another example of what Obama and the libs are going to do to this country - they want all of us peons to be on foot while they have the only means of mechanical-motive transportation.
I guess he's now crowing that "The days of prosperity are over."
I loathe this man.
Zero continues to prove that his Harvard education has made him as sharp as a baseball . . . . . .
And the new industries are what?
Windmills?
Recycle inspectors?
Cap and Trade speculators?
Bicycle repair shops?
There will be a lot more jobs gone before 0 is through. Union guys voted for a guy who hates their products. I hope they like the low paying jobs they are going to find (if they are lucky) in 0’s alternative reality.
Are they loosing their UAW paychecks as well? I thought they were all government employees now?
You beat me to it, Sub-driver. I recalled the same thing, and McCain got crucified for saying it.
I guess we can get those UAW types “green jobs” working in nail salons and sports memorabilia shops that abound in our strip-mall nation.
The elites will drive their SUV’s past we peasants in the streets on their way to have wugyu beef and lobster.
Target practice
Hey, I have an idea. If all those auto jobs are gone forever like Zero says how about creating a bunch of new jobs building wind generators?
He should know. The Government owns 60% of GM after the recent nationalization. He is simply stating the new owners have no plans to create jobs.
A “$12 billion initiative to boost community colleges” tells me that we’re going to get a boatload of NEA members. It also puts off the new jobs for at least 3 or 4 more years because they need time for the students to graduate.
He’s channeling Bill Clinton in Maine.
Bill told that audience almost the exact same thing, and still won the crowd over. He was an amazing salesman.
By fall Obama is going to wish he was still voting ‘Present’ in the Senate chamber.
