Have you ever considered your dog as an extra child? You may not be that far off. New research shows dogs are similar to 2-year-olds in their capacity to understand simple pointing gestures, Discovery News reported.

Who had to clean the gift up?
Your animals look a little.....large....
Our Belgian Terv learned how to spell. R-i-d-e and t-r-u-c-k were recognized even in their spelled form. We had to move to “t-r-a-v-e-l in the v-e-h-i-c-l-e”
Tervs are scary smart!
If my YOUNGER Lab had been deputized to deliver the card, THIS is what would have happened:
"It was like this when I got here - I swear!"
unfortunate but true,
I prefer the term ‘food motivated’
Cute puppy!
Like that would ever happen!
Another factor that may contribute to dogs understanding human cues with "next to zero learning time," as Discovery News described it, is pet owners use of baby talk -- or "motherese" -- with both their children and dogs.
Baby-talking a dog? Now who would do something like that?!?
We had a black lab, that someone had to put their foot on his tail, otherwise he jumped out of the boat or blind with first shot. He didn’t believe people could miss, but with a foot on his tail, he would wait.
I think that how people treat their dogs says a lot about their true nature.

I thought my dog was the only one who noticed shoes.
LOL! My dogs sit at the foot of the stairs, staring intently at my feet, when I come down in the morning. If I'm wearing my walking shoes, all heck breaks out as they bounce around their leashes. Old softy here has been known to take them for a walk even though I hadn't planned on it, just so they won't be disappointed.

But probably a hunt test judge would NOT let me get away with that . . . .
Smartest dog I’ve ever had is my American mastiff. No point telling you everything he understands, nobody would believe me anyway. I switched to hand commands a long time ago, just o keep things quiet. Baby talk bores him, and he turns his head away, likr it’s an insult.
Democrats MAKE gestures like 2-year-olds.
“We had to spell ride to the lake or go for a golf cart ride, etc.”

Tried that; then dog learned to spell.
Are you ready to “go”? became
Are you ready to “G-O”?
which then became
Are you ready to “oh-gay”?
dog apparently could not figure out pig latin.
Looks like you have a pretty cool old gal for a mother in law.
The two-year-old has a long way to go to catch up, but she's learning fast. And she has tons more drive to retrieve than the older one.
I was just at a seminar where they did a "test" as part of an after-dinner game . . . you sat in a chair, dog at heel, and a bird boy out about fifty yards fired a gun and tossed a bird. BUT . . . on either side of the path to the bird, about 8 feet apart, were plastic plates filled with chicken alfredo (left over from dinner), cold cuts, cheese, and dog treats.
I am pleased to say that young Ruby ignored all the plates on her mad dash to the chukar. On the way back you could see her nose wrinkle as she glanced at a plate, but I shouted, "NO! HERE!" and she trotted on back to heel.
She stole some dog biscuits later as we were crawling under benches with dog biscuits on top.
Strangest retrieving game I've ever been involved with . . . there WAS a photographer there and I'll post pictures if he got some good ones.
My 11 month old parti-poodle learned a new word today. I told him to go “right” and sure enough he did. I am amazed at how smart he really is. (A parti-poodle is a multi-colored poodle. Mine is tri-color: red, black and white.)
