The 'Cap And Tax' Dead End (Palin WaPo Op-Ed)
Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, July 14, 2009 | Sarah Palin

Posted on 07/13/2009 8:34:34 PM PDT by redk

There is no shortage of threats to our economy. America's unemployment rate recently hit its highest mark in more than 25 years and is expected to continue climbing. Worries are widespread that even when the economy finally rebounds, the recovery won't bring jobs. Our nation's debt is unsustainable, and the federal government's reach into the private sector is unprecedented.

Unfortunately, many in the national media would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip of the day than on the gravity of these challenges. So, at risk of disappointing the chattering class, let me make clear what is foremost on my mind and where my focus will be:

I am deeply concerned about President Obama's cap-and-trade energy plan, and I believe it is an enormous threat to our economy. It would undermine our recovery over the short term and would inflict permanent damage.

Since the FR search function does not like three-letter words, I expect that this article will be posted again -- and again.

No harm, no foul. :o)

The trick is to also include a search term with four or more letters, like cap tax DEAD:

There is an old trick, to DELIBERATELY write or say something wrong, just so it sounds authentic.

More than likely, the one awkward sentence I pointed out was once part of a larger paragraph, and was perfectly find before a previous subject or predicate was edited out of the piece.

Oh my! GO SARAH!! Oh how the chattering classes are going to chatter!

You hit it out of the ballpark, Governor! And shown the spotlight on this deeply flawed bill. Thank you!

I remember a Freeper last fall at a rally say how tiny she was, much smaller in person. I am sure Sarah doesn’t forget to eat her moose.

Yes, if folks would go look at that thread, you just posted, they would see that some of us Freepers predicted, pretty much, what is now taking place.

It makes me smile!

True if you want to win an “argument” with people who already agree with you. However, to win an argument with people who disagree (ie idependent voters who buy into AGW), you cannot attack their core beliefs. Instead, you have to at least leave those on the side and then still prove your point, here that Cap and Trade is bad. It’s part of the art of rhetoric...

As someone committed to the practice of English, I am impressed on how she makes the sentences "stick together"--and flow so evenly that you can read what she writes very quickly. Coherence.

This isn't what Newt or Kristol does. Newt is an intellectual and wants his writing to impress on more than one level; I'm not criticizing him, but this isn't Newt. Newt's writing intrigues. It would be impossible for him to avoid intriguing. Now, Kristol is a little sloppy in his writing. His ideas are not vibrant, and Sarah is vibrant.

This just clobbered me.

Your journalism degree or Sarah’s? I don’t like to read trite any more, I say give me the premise and summarize neatly at the end. I think that is why I like Willie Brown’s articles, they aren’t full of crap like Peggy N’s... where how you say something is more important that what is said.

Dont get upset with me.
My take is that the small, understandable error that Sarah made PROVES that her work was probably NOT done by a professional writer.
Who cares?
It was much more fun to read than anything the chattering class has given us, in months!

I’ve been reading the comments after the article - soo many people have so many bad things to say i.e. who wrote this for her - she’s dingbat trailer trash.

The Alinksy rules worked really well. Last night I saw an excerpt of Conan’s monologue and when Sarah’s name was mentioned there were a lot of boos.

I bet most of those people had no idea why they were booing. Idiots!

Comments section is already saying Kristol or Newt wrote this for Palin

It was pure Palin. The key bullet points on energy from her TV interviews with CNBC and Glenn Beck way before she was named as VP (natural gas to "hungry markets across America"). The almost jarring exclamation point. The use of "ardent" twice in successive paragraphs (Kristol would have changed it to "enthusiastic" supporter of Obama, so as not to be repetitive). This was Sarah all the way.

She's a runner.

Well, still. She’s a little thin. A woman with five kids feels the need to prove something. She’s proved it. Now have a little ice cream.

Are you projecting your own feelings? I don't think she needs to prove anything. She's been a long distance runner since she was a kid. She's been an athlete since she was a kid.

Long distance runners eat plenty of ice cream and still look good whether they have no kids or five kids.

You’re forgetting something. Hussein raised $600 million last time, and who knows how much in illegal “overseas” contributions. My guess is she will need a minimum of $700 million for 2012.

Hah—she said “clobber”—that so sounds like something she’d say!

Picture an Ivy snob saying “clobber.”

Not gonna happen. :o)

But I can see a SUPER HERO saying it!

Think of it this way: if the MSM could prove that Sarah did not write this op-ed she would be finished.

Sarah is not that stupid and is actually this brilliant in her writing ability.

I just don’t think the way to win any argument is to start out accepting a false premise put forth by your opponent, that is the whole reason for the discussion in the first place..
**********

I agree and immediately had the same problem with her article. No matter what the argument is about, I am one who will not move beyond a false premise. What sense does that make? Her article was great in a world where gw/climate change is proven with any degree of certainty. She seems to assume that it has been proven, or at the least she ignores the issue. Until gw/climate change is dealt with, all energy plans relying on “brown” technology are subject to climate change, and by logical extension, “necessary” cap and trade, type arguments.

However, given the issues with questioning climate change (political and media backlash), she may intend to use the claims made in her article as an end-around to eventually get to the core issue - gw/climate change. I hope so. I would love to see her and others in the spotlight call for an honest debate on the issue. Perhaps as Techno suggested should could pen an article dealing with that issue.

Cap and trade in one form or another will exist if we continue to operate under the same faulty premise.

BTW, Al Gore was a politician who helped make the BS claims stick. There is no reason Palin can’t help tear it down.
