Divorce and hard times (How the recession is decreasing the number of divorces in this country)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 7/13/2009 | Gregory Rodriguez

Can't stand your boring husband? Thinking of calling it quits? Well, you should have mustered the nerve to leave him well before this economic crisis. Now you might not be able to afford to live without him, literally.

It's a well-known fact that financial woes are the biggest cause of marital spats. With the economy the way it is, you'd expect lots of husbands and wives to be at each other's throats. But the conventional wisdom is wrong. This recession is so bad that you can count divorce lawyers among those professions that have taken a hit.

That's good news, right? People are now forced to stay together and work things out. Well, not if history tells us anything. The Depression also saw a decline in the divorce rate, but, according to marriage historian Stephanie Coontz, incidents of domestic violence and outright family desertion went up.

In any case, despite the fact that divorce can cause all sorts of emotional and financial turmoil, its statistical decline isn't as positive a social indicator as one might think. As economist David Friedman has written, divorce is actually a reflection of "an increase in the range of choice available to individuals," and a high divorce rate and the general weakening of marriage "are bad things only to the extent that they reflect a failure of our institutions and expectations to adjust completely to new circumstances."

A recent survey conducted by the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts -- who knew? -- found that 68% of its members "have seen clients who could not afford to get divorced because of recession-related financial problems."

I hope they didn’t spend a lot of money on that survey

I've always maintained that modern marriages fail because men and women don't need each other to survive.

Our ancestors needed the husband to hunt the game and or plant and harvest the crops, etc. The women were needed to cook the food, raise the future farm hands, make the clothes, etc.

Today we can just go to Wal-Mart.

My neighbor lady was all set to leave her husband, take 1/2 the equity in their house as well as other assets and run off with her less financially secure boyfreind. But, alas, the housing boom went bust and she and hubby are upside down on the house.

She’s chosen to stay with hubby instead of a reduced lifestyle with the boyfreind. Hubby told her she had to dump her lover if she wanted to stay.

What a life......

Selfishness is the biggest cause of marital spats.

Yep..that and the 401K is in the toilet. There isn't money to be had in divorce right now. Of course Prez 0 will say he is responsible for saving marriages and it was all part of his plan. I'm sure it was in the stimulus bill no one in congress read.

Not being able to afford a divorce doesn’t mean people aren’t separating. We tease my grandmother for getting married just a few days after my grandfather got divorced from his wife. He had been separated for years and didn’t need a divorce until he wanted to remarry. lol

Like I said, a trend toward morality will accompany this depression, too.

A current tv ad states, “Marriage is the #1 cause of divorce!”.

In the past 4-6 years before the meltdown, Trading Up seemed to be the ultimate career goal of a large group of High Maintence Babes. Their Trading Up policy seemed to run across the age spectrum 30 to 70+. The empty nest instead of a time of sadness, often signaled “Trading Up Time”.

Younger relatives, single and married, described parties where the Trading Up was often an overt and not hidden goal.

A single 40 something year male relative before the meltdown, said that in many social situations, the Trading Up Babes were like head hunters for corporations interviewing potential Trade Ups. Often as soon he was introduced to a trading up babe, he felt like he was being interviewed, having a credit check run and a Dun and Bradstreet review. He got wise to these “Trading Up Interviews” and would stop the process as soon as any woman started the process.

Guys, who had high incomes and a history of Trading Up and often were with wife #2 or 3 really seemed to enjoy this new game where they were often sought after instead of being view as cads.

We know two 60 year old women, who during the prime hunting/trading up season before the meltdown came, went through the same process like they were attending a school.

They got BoToxed, Boob Jobs, private trainers, expensive weekly hair/nail appointments, weekly spa visits and new wedding rings which didn’t look like wedding rings at all. During this process they treated their husbands like trash in front of others. One gal set her goals on a twice married mortgage guy, and the other gal’s target was a real estate guy on his second marriage. Both guys seemed to have a problem of spending all the money they had coming in.

Then, last year the meltdown hit, at about the time, the babes were ready to trade up. The mortgage guy and his trading up Babe were on vacation when he lost his job. The real estate guy didn’t have a saleclosing after June 2008.

Both the mortgage guy’s and real estate guy’s income flows just disappeared. They had so many mortgages on their homes, they ended up losing their homes, jags, Hummers, and Mercedes.

Their IRAs and 401ks became small in size, and the babes tried to go back to their husbands. Both husbands filed for divorce and the divorces were granted. These Babes are in real hard times as those small assets of their first marriage, they were ready to leave and trade up from, became really small when divided in half. Their expensive rings, watches and jewelery have been sold on EBay if they were lucky.

A hair stylist, who has quit because of the lack of trading up babes is thinking of writing a book about clients and those she knew, who Traded Up and now have nothing.

My wife decided she wanted a divorce in December, but she doesn’t pay attention to politics or financial news. Now we are in financial trouble, since we have two households to pay for, and she is shocked. She did me a favor and although it’s going to suck, next time I hope to find a girl with a little more on the ball.
