30% Say It’s Okay To Form A Union Without A Secret Vote, 52% Disagree
Rasmussen Reports ^ | July 13, 2009

Thirty percent (30%) of Americans say it is fair to form a union without having a secret ballot vote if a majority of a company’s workers sign a card saying they want to unionize.

But a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 52% of adults do not believe it is fair to form a union without a secret vote. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure.

Sixty-five percent (65%) of Republicans believe it’s unfair to establish a union without a secret ballot. Democrats and adults not affiliated with either party are more closely divided, although pluralities of both groups agree with the majority of Republicans.

These findings are largely unchanged from March when the new Congress began publicly discussing the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) which would eliminate the legal requirement for a secret ballot vote to form a union.

Unions contend that it is too difficult for a workplace to unionize and that having a majority of employees sign cards indicating a willingness to have a union is enough. Critics say this will lead to intimidation, which a secret ballot helps prevent.

Americans are closely divided over whether Congress should change the law to make it easier for workers to form or join a union: 34% believe the law should be changed, but 36% do not. Twenty-nine percent (29%) are not sure.

Just 21% of all Americans believe the federal government should be allowed to mandate an agreement defining pay and benefits for a company’s employees if the company and their employees’ union cannot reach an agreement on a contract within 90 days. Fifty-six percent (56%) are opposed to giving the government this power which is another provision of the EFCA.

And of that 30%, probably around 95% don’t really know what card check is.

Polling the American people only proves that Hussein and his minions in the US Congress and the schmucks in the MSM are not listening to the American people. The American people do not support their Socialism nor do they want these arrogant, power-hungry schmucks to destroy our country. BTW, what I would prefer to call these supposed human beings can’t be posted here.

Do not let these power-hungry, arrogant Elitists have the power of life and death over you and your family via their DeathCare. Call 202-225-3121 and tell them what you think of their in-your-face arrogance. They were sent to represent the American people; they represent no one but themselves!

Well if the union is counting the votes then 30% should definitely be enough to win

I’m actually looking forward to see a union attempt to unionize the company I work for.

They’ll see that intimidation cuts both ways.

That same 95% cannot get a job because they don’t have skills, and they think the Unions are a sheild against being fired for incompetance.

How is it a free choice when one is harrassed about one’s vote because it isn’t secret?

Extirpation of the anti-democratic fasist forces is going to be a very long, nasty job.

There are too many of them to simply implement the Argentine solution ~ (load on planes, drop in ocean).

I think re-edumacation camps will be needed ~ lots of them ~ all over the place too.

Did the pollster present the CONSEQUENCES of having a secret or non-secret ballot??

Almost certainly not.

It would be highly surprising if most of the public were familiar with the union ballot issue enough to make an enlightened comment on it.

The public prefers entertainment to news—in contrast to, say, 30 years ago when the public still daily read newspapers (which were good papers then, along with the wire services).

Much of Obama’s support/adulation comes from this mass of new generations who are, in general, not inclined toward keeping up seriously on current events—to say the least.

Democracy and freedom require informed citizens. We are seeing more and more the very opposite: a short-attention span, entertainment-oriented public.

Intimidation from union organizers? Loss of basic freedoms? Ho-hum.............

EFCA would allow unions to take over companies without any sort of a vote at all, secret or not.

the card check requirement exists now, but with a higher affirmative response requirement. unions have to pass that before they even qualify for the election.

that could all go away in the middle of the night with another one of those bills that no one is allowed to read.
