GOP Looks for at Least 20 'No' Votes

WASHINGTON -- Opponents of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court suggested they would consider it a victory if more than half of the Senate's 40 Republicans voted against her in this week's confirmation hearing, as the GOP grapples with how aggressively to challenge the nominee. Many Republicans said they viewed 23 "no" votes as a benchmark, because that would be one more than Chief Justice John Roberts received in 2005 and would reflect a significant protest vote. Others said that if the Senate GOP were to split roughly in half, that would signal support to conservatives who oppose Judge Sotomayor without angering Hispanic voters with a wholesale dismissal of her nomination.

I agree—

This should be seconded, and repeated..!@

Other than doing something morally wrong (such as attacking her personally)—we need to to everything to scrutinize her record, and we already know she has a judicial activist philosophy, amd the Republicans are in the minority already so the GOP has nothing to loose for voting “NO”.

I suggest you save your outrage for something based on reality.

Spoken like a true compliant minority GOP pragmatist. No wonder your party is DOA.

At least it would waste Senate time-less bad legislation!

Yes, she is right in her criticism of the weak-kneed GOP response to So-So. So why not dedicate her writing to that and attack the liberal kowtowing, and leave Sarah alone even if just for one column. No, it’s like she has a severe case of ADHD and can’t even finish a column aimed at liberal extremists and squishy republicans without going after Sarah with her vitriolic hate. Severe PMS (Palin Madness Syndrome).

WRONG! Even if all GOP committee members vote NAY, the dems will still easily get the issue to the floor on a party-line committee vote.

NO! They rules are that there has to be at least ONE minority Yea vote.

Is this for real??? Now 20 NO votes is a victory??? WTF is going on when losing by a landslide vote is considered a victory. We are so screwed by these idiots it’s not even funny anymore.

Note to GOP: VOTE AGAINST SOTOMAYOR.

Since when does the GOP or any Republican for that matter care about the Hispanic voter. We lost the Hispanic block this past election and don’t seem to care.

How is voting against Sotomayor’s nomination gonna seem anymore “uncaring” to the Hispanic population than the GOP already does. Honestly.

It’s absolutely amazing anyone would vote for this racist to be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

What a complete joke.

Obama will win this one. She will be confirmed.

Forget it and move on to the battles where we really need to focus our energies . . . defeating Obamacare and Cap & Trade. Let’s not get distracted over something that is inevitable.

And we are supposed to take comfort in 20 “No” votes and continue funding the GOP? I don’t think so.

So is their intent to send a message? Or to show just how impotent the GOP is in the Senate? Because keeping only half your members in the fold is hardly something to crow about.

Come on. You say yourself the the media is in the hip pocket of the Democrats, so why would the Republicans invite a media thrashing over something they can’t win in the first place? How exactly is that politically wise? It’s stupid and if the GOP wants to live up to the reputation of being the “Stupid Party” then they should do as you say and commit political suicide.

“Others said that if the Senate GOP were to split roughly in half, that would signal support to conservatives who oppose Judge Sotomayor without angering Hispanic voters with a wholesale dismissal of her nomination.”

Too much in that sentence that disturbs me. You don’t vote on a nomination based on who you piss off. You vote based upon your principles and convictions. Too much politics these days that has gotten us into the trouble we are in now. That is what is wrong with the GOP...they worry more about how they will be perceived than actually voting on their principles.

I’m almost through with the GOP for good.
