The Ecopalypse, 96 Months Away
The Bulletin ^ | 10 July 2009 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 07/11/2009 1:33:48 PM PDT by JLS

According to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, we only have 96 months left to save the planet.

I’m impressed. 96 months. Not 95. Not 97. July 2017. Put it in your diary. Usually the warm-mongers stick to the same old drone that we only have ten years left to save the planet. Nice round number.

Al Gore said we only have ten years left three-and-a-half years ago, which makes him technically more of a pessimist than the Prince of Wales. Al’s betting Armageddon kicks in January 2016 – unless he’s just peddling glib generalities. And, alas, even a prophet of the ecopalypse as precise as His Royal Highness is sometimes prone to this airy-fairy ten-year shtick: in April, Prince Charles predicted that the red squirrel would be extinct “within ten years”, which suggests that, while it may be curtains for man and all his wretched works come summer of 2017, the poor doomed red squirrel will have the best part of two years to frolic and gambol on a ruined landscape.

I thought we got rid of ecopalypse when we got rid of Clinton.

If the present trend continues, we will freeze to death before 96 months from now.

Steyn really nails it in this one to me. I am old enough to remember the late 1960s environmentalism that the economy of the 1970s halted in its tracks.

No. That was the ego-complex. Of course, that's back (in spades, so to speak...)

Insanity has been known to plague royal dynasties due to inbreeding throughout the ages, and Charles is just the House of Windsor’s inevitable genetic statistic.

I don’t see what the problem is. Overpopulation brought an end to human life in 1986 as a result of of mass starvation.

Common sense says that people can choose best for themselves. That does not fit well for those who want to choose for us using the levers of government. So given the choice between statism and common sense, common sense goes out the window.

In the mid ‘70s, our 4th grade class was told that we would never drive because all the oil would run out before 1980. We would have to live underground because the air would be so polluted and we would all starve because agriculture couldn’t keep up with population growth.

statism and common sense

Common sense should win over statist agenda before statist agenda is a viable concern.

Common sense is lost via laziness apparently.

Why "should" common sense win? Interested parties, ie those who think the will be the elite, push statism.

I understand you laziness comment. I see it as the public would prefer to spend its time working, taking care of its kids etc than be policy wonks. That probably makes for a better society. The problem in the US seems to be those who would be immediately silenced by the statists, the press, have entered into a suicide pact.
