President Barack Obama may never have fired a gun but he is turning out to be one of the best firearms salesmen in American history.
I've sold probably four times as much in the last six months as I have in 20 years combined," said Cliff Hunter, owner of Tommy Bronson Sporting Goods in Memphis. "Hand guns and the tactical weapons, they're absolutely off the charts."
Most of his gun sales used to be for hunting, or personal protection in a city riddled with crime. But just before the November election, anxiety that Mr Obama would win and enact a radical programme of curtailing gun rights began drove business right up.
"Obama's a liberal socialist and I think he's proven quickly how extreme he is," he said. "When they get through healthcare, guns are on the table. They're not talking about it but it's going to happen."
The FBI recorded a 49 per cent rise in gun background checks during election week compared to the same week a year earlier.
"Sales have been up 50, 60 per cent sinces Osama got elected," said Jay Hill, owner of the Classic Firearms gun store in Cordova, just outside Memphis, smiling as he deliberately mixed up the name of the US president with the leader of al-Qaeda.
"He speaks with a forked tongue. I don't trust him a bit."
Crime would always mean there was a demand for gun, especially in a state like Tennessee which is in the South and where permits to carry a concealed weapon are available.
This week, a travelling jewellery salesman who was ambushed by four men, at least two of them armed, pulled out his pistol and shot two of them. The other two would-be robbers fled as the wounded men lay moaning on the ground.

I kinda like the sneering disdain tone the article uses toward Obama.
Let that little punk in the White Hut go ahead & try his little gun-confiscation schemes. As a voting bloc, gun-owners will literally revolt against him.
It’s all true. I live in a suburb of ‘Mogadishu on the Mississippi’ and it will get worse.
The wife is flying around the house doing her canning thing. She bought a dehydrater the other day and it is filled and running nonstop. Meat grinder is going and can't wait for the jerky. Got a bunch more of those bags you use for vacuum packing stuff. I'm standing back and admiring the better half as she takes care of this stuff.
As everyone knows, you can never have enough guns and ammo. But budget concerns can limit your supply. I think we're good for now. Have some folks that are like minded and combined I think we're well off.
It's raining today which is a good thing. With all the rain we have had, probably why all the crops are coming in at once. Thank God for his blessing on me, my family and our friends.
Self Reliant/Survivalist Ping List
what’s the shelf life of jerky and spam???
Jerky has a shelf life of Forever..
SPAM, however is measured in HALF LIFE
/s
Would you please add me to your ping list?
Jerky’s lifespan here is about as long as it takes to get to the middle of a tootsie pop.
I wore an Army uniform and was a hard striper E-6 during the firemans’ strike in Memphis the Summer of 1978. I have seen what the diverse population of Memphis can do when they think no one can stop them. Since Willie “Hump-em” Harrington was elected, the city went from 50% diversity to close to 80% today. I don’t go to the Airport or anywhere in Memphis without being armed...it is a dangerous city..How dangerous? Let’s say the FBI has had two swat vans stolen and their contents sold on the street. Not many cities can brag about that.
Added to the list.
LOL - I keep checking on expiration dates on jerky, the vacuum packed ... looks like just a bit over a year. Forgot to look at SPAM ... trying to get some sort of food stockpile going ... plus add to my grab bag in my car. Of course I know SPAM has to be fried, but wouldn’t that ruin the flavor (hah! - remember the scene from Canadian Bacon?)
Actually SPAM is completely cooked so it can be eaten right from the can, if you can stomach it.
Frying in my experience actually improves the flavor quite a bit.
If you could add me to your ping list, I’d sure appreciate it :-)
Missy
Diversity = Trouble which has been my experience. The code word diversity is something to look out for. When I hear diverse neighborhood it shoots up a red flag. Just my personal experience.
Ammo for pistols in 38, 380 ACP, 9 mm, 44, and 45 cal is hard to find. Even Walmart superstores are sold out. As soon as any ammmo arrives it is sold. I have never seen people stock pile ammo like the past 4 plus months.
Added to the list Missy.
Spam is only good for a ... PAPERWEIGHT
It’s not just hand gun ammo. but rifle as well. My 2 favorite gun shops have a 2 box minimum on just about everything. I think it’s best to get with friends and neighbors who think like we do. Just my opinion.
Diversity sounds good until you experience it.
