Republican lawmakers have slammed US President Barack Obama for branding Honduras' political upheaval a "coup," saying he was aligning himself with leftist Latin American leaders.

Republican lawmakers said Obama's reaction to President Manuel Zelaya's ouster had placed the US in line with the presidents of Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

"By calling this a coup and by early statements insisting on the reinstatement of Mr Zelaya, the administration now stands with the likes of (Hugo) Chavez, (Evo) Morales and (Daniel) Ortega, and not with the Honduran people," Republican Connie Mack said during a hearing by a panel of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Zelaya, who assumed the presidency in January 2006, raised the ire of lawmakers, judges and his country's military by seeking to rewrite the constitution for a referendum without the required congressional approval.

Democrats, meanwhile, backed Obama in calling for Zelaya's return to power. But the legislators were united in criticizing the Honduran leader for creating the polarized atmosphere that led to his forcible removal from office on June 28.

This criticism plays well with Republicans, but it is totally lost on everybody else. Instead of referring to Obama as "aligning himself with leftists" they should say that he is "aligning himself with anti-constitutional forces."

the country was enforcing their laws and yet our media are so dumb along with the left that they fail to see this.

Now imagine if Bush said I am staying and the the army came in and shipped him off.
You think the left would say no Bush has to come back
No they would not

This is the problem with the left, they are so thick that they fail to see what is right or wrong , .
To them it is aboutn left v right not common sense.

Course our state run media are too thick to see why all this happeend ii the first place and only report what our Kenyan Marxist says.

Now I suppose late is better than never but the GOP should have jumped on this from the get go not now.

This was not a coup , the overtaking of a country was done by bozo’s pal.
with the support of Castro, chavez etc

I wish the GOP had some balls I really do
Only Sarah and Michelle Bachman has the balls in the party

I was interested in that “hearing” for the question and answer session with the panelists. I quit watching when it became apparent this was nothing more than a podium for politicians to make partisan points on TV. “Hearing” indeed.

Amen

I keep hearing from the "moderates" that Republicans shouldn't speak out because it makes them targets and they "might lose their careers."

Really? That's the goal? Not to better America, but to "keep my career."

The good thing about Sarah, she's a citizen first, politician second.

Because they are Republicans... not conservatives.

The ‘rule of law’ concept is only slightly more familiar to them than Democraps.

I hear you I really do.

It is high time that the GOP did speak out.

Remember when Bush spoke and right away Pelosi and her crew were in front of the camera denouncing what Bush had said.???

Well why on earth is the GOP not doing this, why are they not speaking out?
I have RINO Crist as my Gov and I swear I go nuts when I hear him say that he is for Floridians not just republicans

Well I believe it is republicans who voted you in and they were wanting a republican approach to ruling this state.

The Dem never voted you in so why are you bending over for them>?
If can keep bending but they will never support him against a Dem.
