GM considers new car listings on eBay
Published: July 10, 2009 at 11:45 PM

DETROIT, July 10 (UPI) -- General Motors Corp. is discussing a possible partnership with eBay that would allow dealers to list new cars on the auction Web site, officials said.

Rob Chesney, vice president of eBay Motors and Marketplaces, told The New York Times no deal is in place. In its initial statement Friday, GM suggested the program was ready for testing by dealers.

"We hope to support GM's new company and vision going forward," Chesney said. "We are excited about a potential new adventure that supports GM's dealers by expanding on how they already reach consumers through new approaches."

Tom Pyden, a GM vice president of communications, said dealers appear to be enthusiastic about the possibility of an eBay link. He said a trial will determine whether eBay listings actually cut the prices of new cars too much.

Cars would be listed by dealers and not by GM directly, he said.

The dealers that got dumped must love seeing this. So, who is going to get the big fat commission on these sales and what sweet deal will ebay get??

I found my last car on the web....did my research for that car and my old car and then played dumb when I sat down with the dealer. It was amusing...

I did buy the car...at what I was willing to pay...about $1000 less than the dealer's shenanigans.

How is this different than what’s already happening?

Dealers put cars on ebay all the time.

What would be new, revolutionary, and perhaps a plus for GM, would be to sell cars directly to the consumer via the Internet - bypassing the dealer network entirely - for those consumers comfortable with doing their own research and making their own choices, as long as the price was competitive with what the dealers cost was.

Even better, would be a corporate center in every state where you could buy direct, and get parts/service.

I’d drive several hours to get my car serviced by the factory over my local dealer. The level of dealer incompetence, in my experience, is staggering.

I thought you had to have a good back ground to sell stuff on ebay.

I agree, the local ford dealer sucks here and I know I would not do business with government motors..

Did GM show it’s new all electric car on TV yet? Have they said how much it will add to your electricity bill to charge one up every 200 miles?

It isn’t news until they do something. Why does UPI think we need to be privy to all the internal discussions?

Oh yea, we own it. Never mind.

My sister and brother both purchased cars off of ebay.

No problems so far.

The main problem with it is that GM (the franchiser) would be competing with their own dealers (franchisees) and that would diminish the value of the dealerships.

From a business point of view, either GM would have to deliver through a dealer or eliminate the dealer new car sales system and replace it with a parts and service system only.

It says GM DEALERS will sell GM cars on eBay.

Which they have already done for years.

Perhaps all the “deal” is just a negotiated discount for GM.

Ooops.

In my haste, I overlooked that. You're right, that isn't new at all.
