Jonathan Sanchez, an unlikely candidate, pitched the majors first no-hitter this season Friday night, dominating the San Diego Padres with an array of pitches in the San Francisco Giants 8-0 victory.
The 26-year-old left-hander returned to the rotation after a nearly three-week demotion to the bullpenand he only got the call because 303-game winner Randy Johnson(notes) went on the disabled list this week with a shoulder injury.
Gold Glove center fielder Aaron Rowand(notes) saved the no-hitter with a leaping catch at the center-field fence to rob pinch-hitter Edgar Gonzalez for the second out of the ninth inning.
Sanchez (3-8) nearly tossed a perfect gamethe only runner the Padres managed came on an error by third baseman Juan Uribe(notes) in the eighth.
With his father cheering from the stands, Sanchez threw a called third strike past Everth Cabrera(notes) to end it and thrust his arms in the air after his first career complete game. The pitcher was quickly mobbed by teammates, including Johnsonthe last to throw a perfect game.

I love baseball. Great story...
And the Mets are doing terrible.
As a huge Giants fan, that was a fun game to watch. Most drama I’ve ever seen in a 8-0 game.
It is a great story. Many Giants fans were calling for them to trade Sanchez for another hitter. Earlier today a fan posted on the Giants web site that the Padres were going to have batting practice against Sanchez tonight. Boy did he prove them wrong.
Wow! I never imagined Randy Johnson would still be playing. Isn’t he like, 75 years old by now? lol
I saw the end of this on MLB Network. Great game.
The HGH cycle must have kicked in.
I guess so. Gotta love it. You know, even when a guy does something like this against your own team, you have to appreciate what just happened for what it is.
Take care...
