NEW YORK The head of the United Nations General Assembly signalled Friday a breakthrough is imminent in talks to resolve the political crisis in Honduras.
Miguel dEscoto Brockmann spoke in New York as thousands of supporters of Hondurass ousted president, Manuel Zelaya, held rallies in the Central American country.
I have a feeling that we are moving in that direction rather quickly, the former Nicaraguan revolutionary, who is also a Catholic priest, told a news conference at the UN.
Insiders suggested that a timetable had been laid out in which Zelaya, a rich landowner whose leftist policies led him to become a close ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, would return to his country as early as next week. He would be allowed to complete his term as president through to January in return for making clear he has no intention of seeking to extend his rule, they said.

Either that, or Honduras is being paid handsomely under the table to allow the rest of the world to save face like that.

Hmmm... article suddenly pulled
An attempt to demoralize. That’s what this is.
Ask the mods to remove it if it disturbs you so. Like it or not, the SG of the UN has some amount of insight.
I just have serious doubts that Zelaya is going to get off easy. He got a break when he was evicted from the country and it was apparently a deal he accepted.
If allowed to return to power, I suspect he’ll be facing charges very soon. And this time there will be no ride to freedom.
Abolish the United Nations.
I can just imagine the content of the security detail that the freedom loving Hondurans would provide to Zelaya. Can almost see him getting taken out by a “friendly fire” incident.
I doubt in a very big way that Honduras is being paid anything, rather they are being squeezed hard (deprivation of aid and means to survive, etc). The Hondurans are being extorted.

Yep, its always....give us power in exchange for promises.
Oh, right, to the UN and this coup, following a constitution *is* a crisis.
What are they talking about? It’s over. The UN’s guy is out!

Thread about Cardinal telling Zelaya to stay gone. I like a faithful Catholic cleric’s leadership over a wackadoo U.N. tool.
The SG of the UN is a COMMUNIST.
Lets not fail to mention that at every opportunity we have.
Yep, this is Reuter’s version of objectivity.
They made a mistake in following the Venezuelan model rather than the Chilean model. They should have let him shoot himself in the back.
Secretary-General Ban might indeed have some insight, but Senor Brockmann is just the President of the General Assembly, a relatively minor one-year position.
Duly noted. My error there.
As far as the static on posting in Breaking - it’s tough to get ANY attention paid to hard news any more around here.
Dead celebs, First Lady fashion faux pas, teachers screwing students - all that mess is what most of us seem focused on.
Good night, all.
Heavenly Father, come to the aid of the Honduran people who are respecting their constitution and rule of law.
Open the eyes of Hillary Clinton and Obama, if that is possible and if not, then please close their mouths!
bears repeating
