T. Boone's Hostile Government Takeover
The Business Insider ^ | 7/10/09

Wrapped in the cloak of environmentalism, suddenly T. Boone's business maneuvers aren't despised.

This week the Senate unveiled a new piece of legislation aimed at getting natural gas powered vehicles on the road. Guess who was on hand to help the Senate promote this piece of legislation? T. Boone Pickens, the biggest booster and investor in natural gas vehicles.

This got Tim Carney* at the DC Examiner all in a lather. It's not just that T. Boone stands to gain from this legislation, but it's the fact that Pickens was once thought of as a bad guy for this kind of behavior. Now, drapped in the cloak of green, working with government he's a good guy.

Perversely, his recent shift—from selling stuff (such as oil) that people want to buy, to selling stuff (like gas cars and wind power) that people buy only when it’s subsidized or mandated—has elevated Pickens’ reputation from greedy capitalist to world-saver.

Pickens was one of the bad guys in a 1992 book Den of Thieves where he was derided as a “corporate raider” and named by one reviewer as oneof “the main players behind why the 1980’s were characterized as the ‘decade of greed.’ ” The offense back then—in addition to selling oil—was his penchant for “hostile takeovers.”

“Hostile takeovers” is an inaccurate term for what Pickens used to do. The management didn’t like them, sure, but the transactions in question consisted of shareholders voluntarily giving their stock to Pickens in exchange for Pickens’ money.

Pickens’ new bid actually is hostile. I don’t want to fund his windmills or methane cars. But if I refuse, the IRS will come after me. But instead of “greed” it’s dubbed as “green.”

T-Bone has 2 BILLION dollars worth of useless GE wind turbines that he needs to pay for. The guy is a greedy slug.

However, it appears as though greed is okay when you're being greedy to help "save da planet."

He seems to think changing over to cars that run on natural gas is a good idea because it’s “plentiful and cheap.” Well, the service stations that have that option certainly aren’t plentiful. Where would you refuel? Suddenly placing such a huge demand on natural gas doesn’t seem like that would keep it cheap, either.

The biggest and most vocal proponent of natural gas vehicles has been Dr. Bill Wattenberg, Ph.D Engineering, and KGO talk show host.

i hate to agree with the boone-head but, we do need to run on natural gas. it's clean, cheap and the delivery system can be installed with not much fuss! what do we all want? Obama telling us to drive compact cars that put out more pollution than a full size gas car, decisions, decisions??

Plus, as long as the unions/feds own any part of American car manufacturing, I REFUSE TO BY A BHO CAR!!!

Actually, there are plenty of places to buy natural gas. Not saying they’re on nearly every corner as are gasoline stations. But, nevertheless, whatever the cost of a certain fuel, our servants of the people aka state and federal legislatures will ensure that taxes remain “adequate”, regardless :)

first off: running cars on natural gas is not a bad idea.
Detroit et al has been looking to the Govt to mandate this,
before jumping in with production of these kind of vehicles. i.e. all govt vehicles run off of natural gas , then phasing in everyone else.

secondly: Boones idea for wind power in the mid west was flawed. Electricity consumption is at its highest during the summer when high pressure sits over the U.S., ie. no wind during these periods. So you would still need full oil burning electricity generating infrastructure that will be used during these hot periods at full capacity, but sitting rather idle at other times. So with wind you wont be able to save on oil related infrastructure capability cost and those oil burning plants that are underutilized will have to jack up their rates to keep a minimum revenue stream. None of this plan is cheap or intelligent.

Boone couldn’t scam people directly out of their money, so he settled for grabbing what had already been confiscated by Big Brother.

I might add that besides being a proponent of natural gas vehicles, Wattenberg also emphasizes that no one idea is a magic bullet in itself. Supplementing electrical energy demand with nuclear power would go hand-in-hand, since a great deal of our electrical energy now comes from natural gas fired power plants.
