Defending Sarah Palin (From a Liberal Professor)

Defending Sarah Palin by Eric Alterman

How can anyone spin Palin’s sudden decision to ditch Alaska? The Daily Beast’s Eric Alterman finds the barracuda’s biggest GOP fans calling it “brilliant,” “shrewd,” and a big first step toward the White House.

Say what you will about the still-governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. She sure knows how to separate the metaphorical men from the boys. How many figures of her national stature—for better or worse—could make so dramatic an announcement as she did on Friday afternoon and leave the rest of the country with no idea whatsoever what the hell it meant?

Is it good for her or bad? Is it good for the country or bad? Is it brilliant? Is it nuts? Is she nuts?

Are we as a people nuts to have let this nutty woman get as close to the White House as we did in the first place? (Doesn’t that McCain fellow have some ‘splaining to do?) It is a reflection on the Mystery of Palin, my friend Ed Kilgore notes, “that none of us has any real idea whether she's imminently headed in the direction of the Big House or the White House.”

Mary Matalin called Palin’s move “brilliant” and imagined that “shoppers at her local Wal-Mart in the Shenandoah would be whooping ‘hoo-rahs’ because of Ms. Palin’s continued popularity among conservative voters.”

Palin’s decision to quit her job without credibly explaining herself has put her punditocracy loyalists in a bind. Naturally, they are not going to bring up reports of alleged affairs, inconvenient tell-all tomes, potential political scandals, or the possibility of federal investigations.

This is almost as nutty as the Kos post that Jim just put up...we have got to be inspired by this sort of stuff, really. They are coming unhinged.

About the author;

Eric Alterman is a professor of English and journalism at Brooklyn College and a professor of journalism at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. He is the author, most recently, of Why We're Liberals: A Handbook for Restoring America's Important Ideals.

“metaphorical men from the boys”...in liberal land where this idiot lives, the real-life men can not be found.

arah Palin initiated a brilliant flanking manuever against the left, the DNC, and the MSM (and throw the RINOs in there for good measrue).

She has them all in a frenzy wondering what her next move will be and how it will be perceived.

Sarah will now get her book out, go on tour, give speeches and promote conservatie principles all over this country in the midst of the Obama administration disater and gain great political capital in the process. Then she will support conservative candidates in 2010 and help them win, amassing much more political capital. She will then take all of that and make an awesome, stunning run for the Presidency in 2012.

How many figures of her national stature—for better or worse—could make so dramatic an announcement as she did on Friday afternoon and leave the rest of the country with no idea whatsoever what the hell it meant?

Sarah said her friends wound understand and her enemies wouldn't believe her anyhow - so she didn't bother to explain.

What a hoot - this guy doesn't "understand" so he's self-selected himself into the camp of "enemies".

Sarah is brilliant.

Alterman is a wuss, liberal lapdog. He’s worked for every pisspoor example of news organizations that you can think of. He once wrote an article about how ashamed he was to be a man. Seems to me a lot more men were ashamed he was a man too, becuase he’s really a nancy-boy in a cheap suit.

My prediction as to how this will play out:

Sarah Palin’s star-power comes into high demand amongst Republican and Conservative congressmen and Governors facing re-election. Her ability to draw thousands to rallies, along with the forthcoming book, will keep her on the front pages and in the news cycle for the next 12-18 months, even if she doesn’t say one word about 2012. As she’s able to use these platforms to get her message out (without the “help” of snarky McLame managers), her star will rise at the same time as Obamas heads into the sunset. As Independents realize who BHO really is, they will start to see Sarah Palin as a moderate, articulate “real American” who has the right vision to put our nation back on track.

Just an opinion, no PhDs or radical projections were utilized in the creation of this posting.

None of us---NONE---know any reason for Palin resigning other than what she said. Any speculation it's to "run for the presidency" or to "spend time with her family" or to "avoid the slime machine" or to "make money" is absolutely that, speculation.

The one thing that it absolutely has done, however, is dominate the news cycle like nothing outside of Michael Jackson's death. No one is even close to Palin, after Jackson, at generating news and opinion.

So IF Palin's objective was to place herself squarely on the national stage as a "celebrity," she has certainly done that. Other than that, I love Ann Coulter's take on how the media treats her like the girlfriend who just broke up with them and "they are sooooo over her," then immediately spend the next hour talking about her.

Some defense.

Every time someone uses the word “nutty” in connection with conservatives or Sarah Palin, it is an attempt to escape engaging on the ideas.

eric alterman is going to be crying when zer0s numbers crash as they are starting to do. It will be the fault of Conservatives, and web sites like this one.

I’m glad I could help in some small way

Eric Alterman is one of the slimiest liberal journalists on the planet. It’s not surprising a journalism school would take him in. But article is a case study of interjected slime and innuendo—nothing to do with a defense of balance.
