Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has bumped back the deadline until Sept. 28 for the six committees working on a comprehensive climate change and energy bill.
"This was always going to be a huge undertaking," Reid spokesman Jim Manley told reporters yesterday following a meeting in the Capitol with the Senate committee leaders and President Obama's top energy adviser, Carol Browner. "The timeline has shifted slightly, to get them more involved."
Originally, Reid wanted the Environment and Public Works Committee and other panels that deal with tax, agriculture, energy and foreign relation issues to have their work done by Sept. 18. But the sheer size of the legislation, not to mention the difficult task of winning 60 votes on an issue that breaks along both regional and party lines, convinced the Nevada Democrat to give the committees a little bit more time.
Reid is still sticking with his plan to get the legislation through the Senate in time for U.N. climate negotiations this December in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"The idea was to put together a bill that gets 60 votes before the meeting in Copenhagen," Manley said.

May Nov 2, 2010 be an interesting day. Yes, I can spell bellwether and momentous.
Nah....they just need more time for the BCS investigation.
Good..we have more time to bombard our Senators and Reps with complaints.
Plus..start sharping your pitch forks, because by then employment will be over 10% and still rising.
Reid knows he doesn’t have the votes, so he needs more time to twist arms, dig up dirt, and get Teddy and Sheets healthy enough to vote.
Just what the economy needs, higher energy prices and less of it.
Pray for America
These people are certifiable.......completely unhinged!
Obama’s climate and healthcare plans are DOA, and I would not be surprised if porkulus is gutted in favor of tax cuts. America is waking up to the FAILURE of his socialist anti-American agenda.
Then, get around to actually writing the bill later. I mean, after all, isn't that the message we keep getting raped with: "Gotta do it now...gotta pass it RIGHT NOW" ?????
Sheets has blasted it. Don’t think they can count on his vote. He’s in one of the biggest coal states in the union.
Just promise to put Byrd’s name on the two or three things remaining in WVa which currently are NOT named after him and he’ll sign on in a heartbeat.
Probably has to do with the sagging poll numbers. Barry has plans to come back from his vacationing and spend more taxpayer money bullsh*tting US citizens to get his poll numbers up.
I thought Sheets said yesterday that he wasn't going to vote for the bill as it stands now.
If THE ONE is as bad on TV as he was with his healthcare push—his numbers will drop even more. The more people really see him, the more they wonder.
If NOBODY has time to READ it before some very short and critical arbitrary deadline, they will have a better chance of passing it.
You can also count on MSM to reinforce all the points needed to make the case.
