President Barack Obama promised to fix health care and trim the federal budget deficit, all without raising taxes on anyone but the wealthiest Americans. It's a promise he's already broken and will likely have to break again.
Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress have already increased tobacco taxes which disproportionately hit the poor to pay for extending health coverage to 4 million children in working low-income families.
Now, lawmakers are looking for more revenues to help pay for providing medical insurance to millions more who lack it at a projected cost of $1 trillion over the next decade.
The floated proposals include increasing taxes on alcohol, which could raise $62 billion over the next decade, and a new tax on sugary drinks such as soda, which could raise $52 billion.
Senate Democrats this week pretty much rejected a proposal by Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., to tax health benefits, an idea that Obama repeatedly criticized during the presidential election campaign but has refused to take off the table.

they’re setting ground work for him to increase taxes, even though they were defending obama against critics who accuse obama will increase taxes before the election
I remember the media used to say what the right believe don’t match reality. Obama SAID he’s not going to increase taxes yet why do the right persist in saying he will increase taxes
The msm will NEVER admit he is lying through his teeth. They would then have to admit doing something else through their own teeth all along!
Most people are perfectly happy with the quality of health care they receive, and don't want to be forced into a European or Canadian type of system. They, the vast majority of Americans, will nonetheless be forced into a system that they don't want, with consequences the public has not even begun to realize, because of the ideological beliefs of the left. It's wrong, it's harmful, and it is not fair to the American public. There are many better ways to fix what is broke while maintaining what isn't broke.
There is a huge reality check coming next year. zero’s “tax cut” that yielded $13 more per week in everyone’s paycheck (or, at least, for those who still have jobs), is no pay cut - it’s a manipulation of the withholding tables. The taxes will be paid next year!!
And, the expiration of the Bush tax cuts will also hit next year on top of many other tax increases that zero and the Dems are sneaking in.
2010 is NOT going to be a fun year for either zero OR the Dems/RINOS in Congress!!
