The Internal Revenue Service has told members of the Coalition for Life of Iowa they would have to give up their 1st Amendment rights in order to be recognized as a non-profit organization, according to a complaint being pursued by members of the Thomas More Society.
The organization incorporated in 2004 as a not-for-profit under Iowa law and has been operating strictly within the guidelines for groups set up for religious, educational and charitable purposes, a letter sent to the IRS last week said.
"As detailed in its
narrative, the Coalition for Life carries out its tax-exempt work by sponsoring educational forums and coordinating with other like-minded groups to educate the public and otherwise promote sanctity of life principles," the letter continues.
"The Coalition is aware that from time to time, individuals who may or may not be involved with the Coalition gather for prayer outside of a Planned Parenthood facility. These gatherings are consistently small (ten or fewer people), peaceful, not in any way disrupting, and consist solely of silent and spoken prayers," the lawyer wrote.

The IRS is a long arm thug of the federal government used as a means of punishment and control over the people. The only way to end their oppression is to abolish the IRS and the federal income tax code by replacing them with a national sales tax via The Fair Tax Act (HR25/S296) .

If you want to talk about terrorist groups, IRS is at the top of the list. Max, what is it going to take to get the congress critters to strap on some balls and put this beast in the ditch?

Let's see here; a group is formed to advance a cause (complying with the massive and oppressive government limits on its functions and activities) and the gubbermint threatens them because some members may or may not participate in a legal activity. Incredible.
Meanwhile, ACORN gets our tax dollars.

I see this as a test case by the government to apply this to any non-profit or places of worship.

Congress likes the IRS the way it is. It’s the perfect vehicle for getting campaign contributions and pre-paid vacation trips: just promise the donors a tax exemption of some sort.

Brownback said the same thing. They were not about to change it because it was too personally profitable for them.

Yes I can see that. If this is successful, the IRS could make the same demands of a church.
In order maintain a church's tax exempt status the IRS could require the Pastor to have (as stated in the article) “members sign a statement that the Coalition will not ‘picket’ or ‘protest’ outside of Planned Parenthood or similar organizations and will not ‘organize’ others to do so,...”
And I would not me surprised if many Pastors complied with the request.

This is a bit out of their jurisdiction...but then again, that never stopped the IRS. And yet, mindless sheep just love taking it.

And they want EVERYBODY to give up the 2nd Amendment!

The only Fair Tax is no tax. Let’s follow the Constitution and shrink gov. by 90%, back to where they are actually authorized, and then “they” can operate with little money like “they” used to do. The Fair Tax has no vehicle for shrinking the government. As a Conservative, that is my first concern.

The IRS is supposed to be a Tax Collection Agency. It is not supposed to be making policies! It has no business making demand that a group has to give up the 1st Admendment rights!
The IRS can only implement the policies made by the Congress! Period!
Unless they went way beyond that without my knowledge or anybody elses!
I wonder if they have toture chambers in the dungeon?

You would have to repeal Section 1 Article 8 that gives Congress the power to levy and collect taxes. To quote "Section 8. The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes,"
The Fair Tax has no vehicle for shrinking the government.
That couldn't be more incorrect. The Fair Tax will eliminate the IRS and it's 11 billion dollar price tag. The Fair Tax will reduce the number of collection points from 140 million individual and corporate tax filers down to approximately 40 million tax collectors via businesses requiring a much smaller federal agency to monitor businesses collecting the sales tax.

You can bet that Obama and his minions from the chicago underworld will make Nixon, his enemies list, and his use of government agencies and power (like the FBI and IRS) look like a bunch of amateurs.

Why do you think the Internal Revenue Code plus all its additional rulings and addendums are now over
67,500 pages long? No wonder why Americans will spend about
US$350 billion this year to comply with 2008 Federal taxes.
When even President Obama admits that our income tax forms are getting ridiculous, a drastic simplification of our income tax system needs to be done, if only to cut down on that US$350 billion per year (and rising in future years!) cost.

The administration is using its most powerful and most feared arm - the IRS.
The power to tax is the power to destroy.

"what is it going to take to get the congress critters to strap on some balls and put this beast in the ditch?" You do realize you are talking about their own cash cow?
They will abolish it when h@ll freezes over or the people rise up.
