An NAACP official has demanded the governor of Pennsylvania call out the National Guard, suspend civil liberties and impose martial law to deal with a recent wave of shootings.
Stanley Lawson, president of the Harrisburg Chapter of the NAACP, urged Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell deploy the National Guard for at least one month and enforce a curfew after more than a dozen shootings rocked the city, according to the Patriot News.
Many of the shots were fired during daylight hours, and one man was killed at a busy intersection in the middle of the afternoon June 24.
"The Guard is for floods and natural disasters. I don't know any more of a natural disaster than of our young people being killed," he said at a meeting at Capitol Presbyterian Church.
"It's time for some real action," he said. "Right now the important thing is to stop this madness."
"We're beyond what the Harrisburg police department can do. We need help," Lawson said.
According to the report, Lawson referenced the 1968 race riots following the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King in Memphis, Tenn. And the subsequent deployment of National Guard troops.
Rather than drugs, robberies and gang activity, Lawson said the shootings were most likely due to fear.

Maybe they feel bad about themselves and don’t know how to express it?
He forgot the part about confiscation of all weapons.
NAALCP calling for police dogs and fire hoses? What’s this world coming to?
Does an applicant (per TOTUS, to be changed to appliCAN) need to establish, via testing, that his IQ is below room temperature to become an official of the NAACP?
Next time Fast Eddie opens his big mouth to criticize Sarah Palin over her job as Gov. he better examine the murder rates between Pa. and Ak. and figure out which state and governor host more overall rotgut to humanity.
Damn Bulgarians just don’t know how to act civilized.
Police yourselves. Never rely on gov’t.
Is this a joke?
Right. One national guardsman shoots or restrains a ‘youth’ and it’s an NAACP chance to sue the state. Help us, government. We can’t control our kids. Sheesh.
A better solution would for the governor to request that County Sheriffs deputize “persons of good character”, who would then be issued radios and hand guns to “occupy” trouble areas as Sheriff auxiliaries, to augment local police departments.
Such a street presence would be far better than calling out the National Guard.
Aside from certain crime dens such as Philadelphia and the Homewood and We’llkillyunzburg area of Pittsburgh, most of Pennsylvania compares very favorably to Alaska.
And except for San Fran and LA, California would be a republican state!!
I thought “Good Ole Boy” Ed and his Democrats had everything under control?
It’s a quagmire. Withdraw all the troops. No blood for Penz-Oil.
This is the same mentality that drives people to call 911 when McDonalds runs out of fries.

Hmmmmmmm...yet, when Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Thomas Sewell etc..in DECADES past, called for the explicit involvement of parents and the black community leaders to offset, to negate, to oppose the black youth culture's descent into vulgarity, disrespect of women, uncivilized, desensitization, rudeness, disregard for authority they were ALL hooted from their speaking platforms.
