PARIS (AFP) — French lawmakers opened hearings Wednesday on whether to ban the burka, calling in experts who said France should act to discourage Muslim women from wearing the head-to-toe veil.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has proclaimed the burka "not welcome" in secular France, drawing a warning from Al-Qaeda's north Africa wing that it was ready to "take revenge for the honour of our daughters and sisters."
Home to Europe's biggest Muslim minority, France has set up a special panel of 32 lawmakers to consider whether a law should be enacted to bar Muslim women from wearing the full veil, known as a burka or niqab.
At the first hearing, two academics described wearing the burka as a throwback to a form of archaic Islam and a type of cult-like behaviour, incompatible with modern France.
Islam expert Abdennour Bidar called the full veil a "pathology of Islam" embraced by hardline Salafists who tell Muslim women to cover themselves as a way to "get back to their roots."
"It's up to the republic to help Islam in our country choose its destiny and help French Muslims resist this pressure," said Bidar.
"We must find ways to prevent the burka from spreading. Whether that would be a law or something else is not for me to say."

I think people in free societies have the right to wear what they want to wear. This is wrong.
Personally I will be delighted...the Muslims don’t allow freedom of expression much less worship in the lands they control.

having been and lived over in Europe many muslim women wear it to show they are muslim and that they do not want to conform to weatern values.
No where in the koran does it state a woman should have to wear one and I see no reason why the west should adopt a part of sharia law.

These women are not free,even if they live in a free society.
If they want to come into western societies, then they have to conform to OUR western ways of living. I’m sick & tired of having to walk on eggshells for these people!

With all due respect, you simply do not understand Islam. It cannot allow a ‘free society’ to exist. Islam wants to kill you, convert you, or have you live in subjugation. France will survive only if it deports all Islamists.

tired of hearing how their countries are great because it is deep in culture and tradition and when we go over there we respect that, and yet when they come here we have to still respect there tradition while they ignore ours

I’m glad that some in France are finally waking up to the Islamic nightmare they’ve let fester over the years, but I’m afraid it may be too little, too late. They should have nipped these muzzies in the bud years ago.

It’s like gang garb. You can’t ban the handkerchief if it’s causing problems, but you sure can harass it’s wearers if your law enforcement. That’s the way I see it. France obviously takes it even more seriously. They are a lot closer to North Africa than you and I. I say let the French decide what’s best for the French.
I guess it’s sort of like if Mexicans started wearing sombreros and ammunition strung across the their chests and claim it’s to retain their cultural identity. Nothing aggressive about it. The Mexicans would just wear them as costume. It’s a bad example but what I’m trying to say is, there are signals sent out by large immigrant populations that can change the attitude from immigration to invasion/gang control.
The hardcore muslims use their women as cultural weapons. It’s part of the assimilation process and a reason they have been so successful expanding and dominating whereever they get a decent toehold. It represents order and modesty, something missing from most 3rd world hellholes. I don’t want it banned and think it would probably be impossible to get accomplished in the USA, but’s it aggressive as all get out.

I saw a muslim woman wearing the tradition black dress all the way from her head to toe walking down a hot Texas street in a small Texas town on July 4th——made me sick.
Anti-masking laws are on the books of many (if not most or all) states.
