Bush will be the first president not to benefit from one former lifetime benefit: Secret Service protection.

"He'll be the first one to receive it for 10 years," said Malcolm Wiley, Secret Service spokesman. Congress changed the law in the 1990s so that any president elected after Jan. 1, 1997, and his or her spouse will receive the federal protection for only 10 years.

Considering all the terrorists Bush pissed off (know a man by the quality of his enemies), this could be bad.

This is a bad idea, no matter who was in the White House. I understand that it saves the taxpayer's money, but there are too many people out there who might want to do harm to a former President.

Secret Service protection should continue for life, even if it was a skeleton staff.

And why on earth would the filthy trash in the press be broadcasting this?

Stupid short sighted law passed by a Republican Congress when Clinton was in charge.

During the 1970’s, a former Italian Prime Minister was found dead in the trunk of a car after being tortured and executed by terrorists. Do we ever want that to happen to one of our former presidents/first ladies?

C’mon. *You* know the reason. So do I.

(But the media aren’t liberal tools. We know that because they keep telling us that.)

This isn’t a bad thing. We don’t have kings. We have presidents. The 10 year limit is a good thing.

Seems like a good cost cutting measure as we have presidents and first ladies who live 30 or 40 years after they leave office.

Up until she died a couple years ago, Lady Bird Johnson had SS protection and her husband left the White House in 1968. Both the Carter’s have SS protection and they have been our of the White House for almost 30 years.

W is back amoung his friends and does not need it anyway.

I doubt he cares at all.

There are a lot of fellow Texans who would, for nothing, risk taking a bullet to help protect him.

His legacy as Pres. is going to be good.

WE need to put a 10 year limit on their pay and benefits too. And apply that to congress cretins as well.

Not sure I really like the exception here, especially in view of This Story. If I were Dubya I'd be packing.

You do realize that a President can’t change the law? Has to go through congress first.

A President can ask Congress for a lot. Reagan asked for a line item veto for example , and a larger Navy, the B1b, etc

10 years isn’t long enough for W. Jihad splinter cells will wait forever to take him out. That is how effective W was. But 0 knows this, too. Don’t expect any changes anytime soon.
