North Shore Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk today said he's edging toward a run for U.S. Senate now that Democrat Lisa Madigan opted not to run.
"It's obviously more likely. But I'm still talking to supporters and friends," Kirk told the Tribune. "It's a direction that I've been looking at hard. But I'm not going to make an announcement today."
But a Republican source said Kirk told U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas that he will run for Senate. Cornyn heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Today, Kirk started calling top colleagues to seek advice about whether to run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Roland Burris.
Kirks move came after Madigan, the Democratic Illinois attorney general, announced she was seeking re-election to her current job and passing on runs for Senate or governor.
Kirk had planned to make an announcement on his political future weeks ago, but delayed while awaiting Madigans decision. Kirk has indicated an interest in the Senate and governors race.

Let’s take a poll: Would you Ill Freepers vote for this guy?..
Another RINO. One of the republicans in the HR that voted for the Cap & Trade.
Well, if it’s Burris vs. Kirk, is the decision that hard?
When hell freezes over. He screwed the country when he voted for CAP & TAX and now he wants us to put him in the Senate. NO WAY!!!!!!
And against the surge. As a recently deployed reservist, he should have known better.
Primary no. Depends on who the dems run against him. I’m guessing it won’t be a pro life, pro gun candidate from southern IL.
Think about it a minute. This slug or Rollo Buris?
I heard Lisa met with Obama. She was probably told that they were giving Kirk the Senate seat in exchange for his Cap & Trade yes vote. She’s young, with kids, in no hurry to get to Washington so she went along with the decision. Kirk in the Senate would be no different that a Dem, so my vote will be NO! Does Lisa as Attorney-General have anything to do with the Rezko investigations? Maybe they want to keep her there for now to protect O.
LOLOL. Kirk is cooked.
I am from Chicago - this guy is a total, smarmy phony. He is the very definition of a RINO, representing mainly the blue blood North Shore suburbs. He is completely anti-gun among other things and repeatedly wraps himself in the flag of his military service.
Illinois Republican Party - Burris is a sitting duck - please ignore all the RINOs that are part of the machine and run a conservative.
Oh, and please tell Judy Baar Topinka to go away!
A month ago, I would have contributed to his campaign, put up signage and bumper stickers. Now, no way. His incredible lack of judgment in voting for the largest tax increase in history and the creation of a new huge Fed bureaucracy makes it clear he is no different than what we've got now.
Unless the Pubs run a Rat wanna be. Why vote for a Rat in Pub clothing.
Oh, and please tell Judy Baar Topinka to go away!
Amen!
I hate to say it, having voted for Kirk several times, but TJ is right.
Illinois is the land of center-left Republicans. To some extent I have always figured that they are less bad than the Socialists. However, I think it’s time to purge the worst of the RINOs.
As I wrote to Mr. Kirk in a recent (post cap & trade) e-mail, good bye and good riddance. I will vote for another in the primary and in the general election.
I’ll have the lasagna.
Kirk sold his soul with his tax and trade vote.
Then you all need to tell him so: NO. STOP all R I N O S!
When Rod Blagojevich goes down hard, and is facing an extended sabbatical at Marion or some other Federal garden spot, he will flip hard, fast and intense on Speaker Madigan: Rod and Mike Madigan hate each other with an intensity similar to Roseanne Barr hating Rosie Odonnell for snarfing the last box of twinkies in the house.
And he voted against the surge. And for that nonsensical family income cap for people in the financial industry.
Good point. Other than wanting to stay in Chicago with the kids, I figured there had to be a reason for Lisa putting her political ambitions on the back burner for now. Your observation seems spot on.
