Yeah, maybe these people can get jobs at Wal-Mart, they’ll be competing against former doctors once “healthcare” kicks in. Hows that Hope and Change thingy working out?
And still we import H1Bs who “do the work that Americans won’t do,” including high-paying engineering jobs. I was priced out of a job last year by H1Bs, who took 1/2 of my pay (which was about the going market rate), but were less qualified.
The Obamaloons believe that engineering can be done outcountry.
The only persons that should be provided jobs are those with no abilities whatsoever - and there’s jobs in the congress, government, MSM, and ACORN for these losers.
shovel ready...
Thankfully the stimulus passed, otherwise the rate would be over 10% by now.
We’ve absolutely screwed ourselves when it comes to engineering.
The suits running businesses have gleefully offshored engineering jobs. I suspect there was some small measure of payback in those decisions. You know, teach those smart engineering guys who’s boss. Pay them back for all the mocking of business majors. So, engineering jobs were offshored if it saved $1.37 a year.
The long term effect is that people bright enough to be engineers avoided engineering in college because they want to be employed when they graduate.
That sure as HELL isn’t true in Silicon Valley.
(Unless they only count people with H1-Bs as engineers, and only then because an unemployed H1-B is subject to deportation)
And still we IMPORT engineers via H1Bs. The world has gone mad.
On my last full time job, I was replaced by THREE H1-B's.
I’m worried about my friends at Sun/Oracle.
Sounds right...
I work Comcast Business technical support along side a laid off engineer.
In 2002 I was out for 16 months .. BUT I was still getting 5-6 interviews a month. This time I have been out since Oct 2008 and I have had 2 interviews. I passed the first but then was told that the company had pulled the req. I have not heard back from the second. Both companies are very large
Judging by the number of help-wanted ads on DICE.com (where 90% of the IT help wanted ads are placed), I’m thinking that the economy is headed for very very tough times in the next year.
IT jobs are a bellweather indicator — when the economy cools off we are the first to be fired. Likewise, if the company sees any uptick, they soon hire to catch up on projects and upgrades that were put off.
At any rate, according to the number of help wanted ads I’m seeing... it’s gonna be tough for a while.
“I work Comcast Business technical support...”
My condolences. Yes, I’ve had to call your support number, and yes, I’m sorry if I was THAT grumpy...
“I passed the first but then was told that the company had pulled the req.”
Yup... last week I got two such phone calls... “Yeah, you’re the prefect guy for the job, but the company postponed the hire...”
ping
It “soared” to below the national rate. While it still sucks it’s actually an indication that the industry is doing OK.

I’ve been in the industry for 30+ years .. I have NEVER seen it ANYWHERE as bad. All H1B’s need to be sent back home RIGHT NOW
