RIO DE JANEIRO -- RIO DE JANEIRO- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been the clear winner so far in Honduras' political crisis, leading the hemispheric condemnation of the military ouster June 28 of President Manuel Zelaya while orchestrating Zelaya's most audacious attempt to regain power, analysts said.
Chavez, an avowed socialist and critic of the United States, has emerged in the unlikely role as the leading champion of democracy for Honduras, though he catapulted to fame as an army colonel by trying to overthrow Venezuela's democratically elected government in 1992.

What a mindbogglingly deceptive sentence.
I can only conclude that "democracy" doesn't mean what I think it means, and that Hugo Chavez knows when it's favorable to call something a coup, and when it's not.
And, our media, President and State Department are marching to his tune.
I’m aware of that, don-o. Was that directed at me?
I sure hope Honduras is not the front line battle ground for the fight for world socialism.
Chavez is following the rules for radicals to the letter.
Was that directed at me?
No. A general comment. I’ll venture that a huge majority of our “fellow Americans” do not have the foggiest idea.
Pax vobiscum
"We can judge from the way that he's reacted - he's been very nervous - that if the coup against Zelaya prevails, this could create a perception in Central America and beyond that Chavez is now facing a powerful counter-reaction, and that people are now willing to stand up to him," Vargas-Llosa said. "This could also embolden foes in Venezuela, including the military, to try to stop Chavez the next time he violates the law there."
I think the author is referring to Chavez' attempt to portray himself as the champion of "democracy," because later in the article, he talks about how successfully Chavez staged Zelaya's attempted return and how it took the heat off Chavez and made him look powerful, even though he and his allies are becoming increasingly unpopular throughout Latin America.
However, I think the author is wrong if he feels that Obama isn't supporting Chavez. Those international bodies - OAS, UN - would never have gotten involved in the attempt to fly Zelaya back into Honduras without the go-ahead and encouragement from Obama.
At one point, however, the author says that Chavez wants to reinstate Zelaya immediately, by any means, while Obama and Clinton are willing to do it more slowly. I think this indeed is the only difference. Bambi is afraid of overplaying his hand and having a backlash if he supports a military attack (Chavistas from Nicaragua, perhaps) to reinstate Zelaya, so he's going to achieve it by other means. But at all times supporting Chavez, and Chavez knows it.

Chavez planned a slaughter in Honduras
The goal, on Sunday July 5, was a cause and create martyrs slaughter
TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS AFP captured the moment when Hugo Chávez coordinated from the office, the military operation that led to Manuel Zelaya Rosales of Honduras, in a blatant violation of Honduran airspace.
Yes, I know what Chavez had in mind - either way, I doubt Zelaya would have been in office much longer.
Pure propaganda. This isn’t news this is Marxist spin.
