Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) hauled in $1.2 million in the second quarter as he prepares to face Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) in his reelection bid next year.
In a statement, Vitter announced that he now has $3.2 million cash on hand.
Im grateful for this tremendous show of support from folks across Louisiana who support my fight to hold President Obama and his reckless-spending, liberal allies in Congress accountable," Vitter said.
Melancon, who is currently serving his third term in the House, is expected to challenge Vitter next year but has yet to announce. Vitter's fundraising haul puts him at a significant early advantage since Melancon reported under $1 million cash on hand at the end of last quarter.
Vitter's second-quarter total shows he has stepped up his fundraising efforts since last quarter, when he reported raising $731,000.
The Republican's war chest will also likely signal to Democrats that Vitter, who was embroiled in a prostitution scandal in 2007, may not be as vulnerable as some observers have suggested.
“that Vitter, who was embroiled in a prostitution scandal in 2007”
I’m still waiting to see an article that DOESN’T mention this...although it was only at the end this time.
Kind of like how every story about Ted Kennedy ends with, "Kennedy, who killed a woman while drinking and driving". /s
By next year, the economy will probably be so bad that his indiscretions will be the last thing anyone cares about.
Vitter's a scumbag, objectively speaking. Kennedy is worse. They should mention both. And Barney Frank's prostitution ring while they're at it.
This is good. I am glad to GOP candidates raise decent money. For the 2008, GOP candidates could raise hardly anything. Its as if the GOP just wanted to throw the election away.
Objectively speaking, let 'em get the sack in the chronological order of their offenses. How the Hell long has Kennedy been in the Senate? How long since Frank's little indiscretion? We all know that both of them will only leave the Senate on a gurney.
Vitter, for all his flaws, has been a very good friend to us in the Senate. Anyone here who cheers for his political demise is an idiot.
