Beware of Cap and Trade Climate Bills (The Electricity and Energy Tax Bill )

Beware of Cap and Trade Climate Bills

These measures would set a limit, or cap, on carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use. The effect of such a cap would be to impose rationing of coal, oil, and natural gas on the American economy. Each covered utility, oil company, and manufacturing facility would be given allowances based on past emissions or some other formula. Those companies that emit less carbon dioxide than permitted by their allowances could sell the excess to those that do not; this is the trade part of cap and trade. Over time, the cap would be ratcheted down, requiring greater cuts in emissions.

-snip -

The Slippery Slope

It is a near certainty that the first climate bill enacted will not be the last one. In fact, most major environmental organizations have already criticized S. 2191 and other pending global warming bills as inadequate, or as at best "a good first step." The economic impacts of S. 2191, though substantial in their own right, could be a mere down payment toward costlier subsequent measures.

Conclusion

Cap and trade bills are nothing short of a government re-engineering of the American economy. And S. 2191, with its aggressive targets to reduce emissions from fossil fuel use, would put the nation on a path of serious economic harm not justified by any benefits.

KEYWORDS:
Okay. Why do WE (those of us who are sane enough to oppose this tax) still refer to this madness as "Cap and Trade" like it is some harmless program?

Isn't this like calling an abortion clinic a "Family Planning Center?"

Why not call it the Electricity and Energy Tax Bill so people can get their heads around it? I still hear people asking what it is and they do not understand what an insidious slide it will put us into. This one really could slam us with a tidal wave of tax and price increses that will nail each and every one of us to the wall. Why do we always allow the left to define the terms and then we use them? I duntno, isn't this something we can really do, even if we can't get it into the news broadcasts, at least refer to it as the Electricity and Energy Tax Bill so at least people who don't understand might say "why do you call it that?" or What is that?" which gives us an opening?

I like the term "Light Switch Bill". Every time you flick on a switch, you will be taxed.

The supposed reason for this monstrosity is to force people and industries into using "alternative" products and services... Or to discourage the use of certain products and services, through the use of taxes. That's all well and good, if there ARE alternative goods and services, at a "reasonable price."

The problem here is that the only alternatives are kept off the table (nuclear, coal, and natural gas), which means that in addition to the taxation, supplies will drop, which will push prices even higher.

To put it bluntly, this crap violates the "rules" of government intervention in trying to make social policy. What this bill does is try to cripple to economy, cripple industry, and jack prices up to the point where the middle class will be eliminated, and there will be massive social unrest.

This bill is a blatant attempt to destroy the nature of the American government and society, and replace it with an authoritarian, communist (not socialist) government.

You've covered it very succinctly!

Yesterday a wheeler/dealer type guy that we know pulled up in his brand new pick-up, it still had the paper tag. He wanted us to consider letting his company put wind turbines on our land. We just let him talk.

By the end of our conversation, we find out that the company is BP and they are interested in it for carbon credits. They already have TARP money and BLM and state leases and our 720 acres is right in the middle of it all.

All of this stuff has taken months to put together and they act like Cap and Trade has already passed and is the law of the land.
