VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.
The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.
Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.
The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

It sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. On the other hand, I understood the part about a global economy with politicians in charge and redistribution of wealth perfectly.
I may not be a genuis but shouldn’t it be written so that most people can figure out what in the heck he’s talking about?
“I’m shocked at this. Anybody care to explain?”
He’s German. He can’t help it.
Then you have chosen to pull a quote out of context and run with it. In case you missed the quote that I highlighted earlier, here it is:
In order not to produce a dangerous universal power of a tyrannical nature, the governance of globalization must be marked by subsidiarity, articulated into several layers and involving different levels that can work together. Globalization certainly requires authority, insofar as it poses the problem of a global common good that needs to be pursued. This authority, however, must be organized in a subsidiary and stratified way[138], if it is not to infringe upon freedom and if it is to yield effective results in practice.Benedict XVI understands human nature and its temptations. He doesn't think or write in short soundbites. One can't just grab one sentence or paragraph from a long document and think that that short excerpt summarizes what he is saying in the document. Look at what happened when the lamestream media took one quote out of context from a lecture he gave in Germany at Regensberg University. They deliberately highlighted that quote because they knew that out of context it would be very controversial. However, it was merely a side point leading up to the main thesis of his lecture and wasn't something he said, either.
He has clarified what he means about a global authority. It is not what all of the chicken littles on FR are claiming he means. He includes multiple references to the Catholic concept of subsidiarity. One cannot comment effectively if they do not know what he is talking about.
So, your idea that he advocates an armed one world government is completely unfounded. He frequently denounces violence as a solution to social problems.
It’s not rude to point out that we are rich, but personally, I am sick to death of those words being used as an admonition. Name one country on the face of the earth that gives more than we do.
You're living in a dream world if you think subsidiarity negates hierarchy. That's kind of like saying a mail room supervisor can tell the CEO to take a hike if he doesn't like what the CEO wants him to do. Or perhaps, better yet, an altar boy can tell the Pope he's banishing the Sacraments from Roman Catholicism whether the Pope likes it or not.
POWER assigns to the OFFICE, and the higher the office's place in the hierarchy, the more power it accrues. Catholic clergy understand hierarchy very well. They just about invented it in its modern form. The Pope wants to superimpose a hierarchy above all other hierarchies, and all his and your silly disclaimers about subsidiarity are mere window dressing, catnip for fools who don't understand the uses and functions of power.
Many Catholics are democrats and vote that way. It was apparent in this past year’s election of Obambi. They and other Christians who are not Catholic voted their party instead of their moral values.
I thought the Pope was infallible.
Me, too.
Yup, and there are none so blind as those who will not see when it’s right in front of them.
Those who have eyes to see ...
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."
Such an authority would have to be "regulated by law" and "would need to be universally recognized and to be vested with the effective power to ensure security for all, regard for justice, and respect for rights."
"Universally recognized?" lol. Obama is "universally recognized." So is Michael Jackson. It hasn't given either of them much credence.
"Obviously it would have to have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums," he said.
"Authority?" What kind of world-wide authority? A world court? A global stock market? Maybe he wants to change the petro-dollar to Euros. Think that's a good idea?
This country is being sold down the river Nile at lightening speed.
The UN section is tough to understand outside of the context of the rest of the encyclical.
Not so tough. About as tough as understanding "encroaching fascism." Bureaucracies do not diminish. Like all parasites, they just multiply until they kill the host.
And I would say that every spiritual decision has a moral consequence too.
If the Pope had take the advice of the Lady of Fatima and consecrated Russia with prayer in 1917 when Russia was in flux before the 1923 Communist take over think of how many millions of lives would of been saved at the hands of Communism.
it depends, the Protestant gang or the Catholic gang?
He is a fascist. He always was a fascist.
A perfect epithet for anti-Catholic bigots of all times.
Do you approve of your leader’s assessment and hopes for our economy?
Yep, it IS frightening. Too many Catholics are democrats and that’s how they vote.
It comes with the territory, LOL.
I have made quite clear my refusal to answer your questions, being fraught with false-dichotomies and lies as they are.
America is THE most generous country in the world and Americans are the most generous people in the world. Who gives whenever there’s an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, floods, tsunami’s across the world. WE are there, usually first in line, to help.
