Murtha ally held by feds in kickback
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | July 7, 2009 | Paula Reed Ward and Dennis B. Roddy

Federal prosecutors filed corruption charges yesterday against a onetime defense contractor who has ties to both U.S. Rep. John Murtha and a suburban Johnstown defense contractor currently under criminal investigation.

Richard S. Ianieri, former president and CEO of Coherent Systems International Corp., was accused of accepting $200,000 in kickbacks. He is charged through a criminal information and is expected to plead guilty.

No date has yet been set.

According to the court filing entered yesterday, Mr. Ianieri is accused of taking the kickbacks from a date unknown through January 2006 while an officer for Coherent, which was a prime contractor for the United States. The information charges that Mr. Ianieri "solicited and accepted kickbacks from 'K,' a subcontractor of the United States."

~snip~

Since 2003, Mr. Ianieri and colleagues at Coherent have directed a total of $72,950 in political donations to a number of congressmen, both Democrats and Republicans, with ties to the defense industry.

Twenty percent of that amount -- $14,000 -- was given either to Mr. Murtha's re-election campaigns or to his political action committee.

When Coherent entered into the defense market in 2006, the company hired KSA Consulting, a Washington-based firm that once employed Mr. Murtha's brother, Kit, and which is headed by a trio of partners that includes Carmen Scialabba, a onetime Murtha aide.

I guess it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who the mysterious “K” is.

That’s kinda what I was thinking. :)

Don’t know why they didn’t just name him, or them, there’s two Kuchera brothers.

This is the first round of criminal charges coming out of this investigation. There will be more.

From what I understand, P.M.A. lobby group (that has since closed), will be the next shoe to drop.

The common thread in these two investigations is Murtha.

No doubt and hopefully there will be a lot more.

The feds have been really quiet on this investigation, they haven’t leaked anything that I know of. There’s bound to be charges of people involved with PMA because they’re the reason for the start of all this.

You’re correct about Murtha being the common thread. It’d be nice to see some of the people that will be indicted flip on Murtha for lighter sentences. I’d bet a lot that’s what Murtha is sweating over. I imagine the Kuchera brothers are sweating profusely too.

Ianieri was charged via a federal criminal information, which typically indicates that a defendant is cooperating with prosecutors.

LOL!

I'll bet Murtha doesn't even want to think about the word "cooperate."

The charges, filed late Monday by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, came in the form of a filing that typically indicates that the defendant plans to plead guilty and cooperate with investigators.

From an article by Carol Leonnig at WaPo. :-)

The company that allegedly paid the bribes, identified in court filings only as "K," closely resembles Kuchera Defense Systems

Fox news just ran the story on TV.

As far as anyone cooperating: if anyone has info (that the govt. does not know) against Murtha, they could maybe cut a deal to walk on their own crimes.

We have not heard the last of indictments between the P.M.A. investigation and the Kuchera investigation. A lot of govt. man hours on these two seperate investigations.

For a liberal rag, I have to give kudos to the Post-Gazette. They have stayed on top of this story. It would be lovely if one of these clowns would roll on Murtha. The beauty of this is that there is so many going down right now that someone is going to roll. One person might keep his mouth shut, but not a whole bunch of people.

Just heard Bill Russell (the challenger to Murtha the last time) give a speech on July 4th, hope he runs for the seat again in 2010. If Murtha gets convicted, send him to Gitmo.

Agreed, the Post-Gazette is staying on top of this as are a few others in the MSM, Carol Leonnig at WaPo for one which is kind of a surprise.

This guy is only the first to be charged and it's pretty certain there'll be more. It'll be a beautiful thing if one or more rolls on Murtha, the turkey is long overdue.

Bill Russell is going to run again but he'll face another Repub in the primary first, a Tim Burns. Hopefully Russell wins it because he's a better man and will have a much better chance against Murtha.
