Several hundred Uyghur residents clashed with armed police forces in Urumqi on Tuesday, two days after bloody riots in the capital of China's Xinjiang region that state media said left at least 156 people dead and led to the arrests of over 1,400 people.
In the latest clash, the residents called for the release of relatives and others who were detained in connection with Sunday's riots, believed to be the biggest ethnic unrest acknowledged by Chinese authorities since communist China was founded in 1949.
Police have arrested 1,434 people in connection with the riots, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday, citing official sources.
The death toll is expected to rise further as police say more bodies have been recovered from street corners and more among the 1,080 injured in the violence died in hospital.
Sunday's riots, which stemmed from discord between the region's ethnic Uyghur Muslims and Han Chinese, appeared to have triggered protest attempts elsewhere in the restive region.
Xinhua earlier reported that police had dispersed more than 200 "rioters" who had gathered at the Id Kah mosque in Kashgar on Monday evening.
It also said police have received information that there are attempts to organize more unrest in other areas of the region.
More than 20,000 security forces including armed police and troops were sent in to quell Sunday's unrest. Xinhua said police had arrested several hundred participants, including "more than 10 key figures" who allegedly stirred Sunday's unrest, and were still searching for 90 other "key suspects" in the city
