...But trouble may be brewing for Republicans in Florida, where the Club for Growth, a conservative anti-tax group, is seriously considering running ads in the Republican primary race against Gov. Charlie Crist for supporting higher state taxes and President Obama's $800 billion economic stimulus spending plan.
Mr. Crist's opponent for the Republican Senate nomination next year is former state Speaker of the House Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and a young, up-and-coming party leader running on cutting government spending and taxes. This is where Mr. Crist may be especially vulnerable...
"There are stark differences between the candidates on fiscal issues," said Alex Burgos, spokesman for the Rubio campaign. "The governor signed a budget on May 27 that included $800 million in fee increases and a $1-per-pack cigarette-tax increase."
Mr. Rubio, on the other hand, is calling for eliminating all property taxes on primary residences and replacing that tax with a controversial flat consumption or sales tax, modeled in part on the FAIR tax proposal at the federal level...Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), has praised Mr. Rubio, calling him "the most pro-taxpayer legislative leader in the country."....(the) grass-roots organization expressed deep disappointment that Mr. Crist "went against his commitment to Floridians and broke his pledge as governor to oppose and veto any and all tax increases."...
...the governor is a proven vote-getter who is seen as the only candidate capable of winning in a state that has become much more competitive... But taxes and spending have become the (GOP's) strategic issues in its bid to repair a damaged brand, and the party's restive base is in no mood to vote for anyone seen as going soft on either one of them.

“But trouble may be brewing for Republicans in Florida”
Why isn’t it “trouble for Republicans” when a RINO like Crist gets money or support? Why is it only “trouble” when a conservative gets money or support?
That’s what I wondered. I think Rubio on the scene is a very good development.
My own congressman (Tim Murphy), whom I consider a pretty decent guy, only gets a 38% from Club for Growth. I give him a pass because he is a pediatrician by trade and has a soft spot for children. He is also great on socially conservative issues. Yeah, I would like to see him do better than 38% on the CFG issues, but the constituency in our district is not well-educated on the advantages of conservative economics.
The Club For Growth is currently the most effective conservative voice out there, an organization worth your time and support.
I don't get it. How is it that the Republican's only option (according to this story) is a RINO? So it's assuming by default that the Rats will win no matter who they run unless we put forth a RINO. I think this is how the media kills us--this allows the Rats to run an even more liberal candidate so that they win either way.
GOP NEEDS TO STAND FOR SOMETHING OR THEY WILL SURELY FALL FOR ANYTHING.
STAY STRONG & CONSERVATIVE, FLORIDA!!!
I quit Club For Growth because Pres Steve Moore was writing pro-illegal alien editorials in the Wall Street Journal.
Crist is a disgust RINO. Rubio will not win upstate unless they know he is against illegal immigration. We know Crist is open-borders and a stinking cross dressing rat. I say cross dressing not to imply anything other then he pretends to be aahh...ahh...Republican.
I’m voting for Rubio! I don’t know who thinks Crist is any good for our state.
CFG ads + Palin campaigning = Rubio nomination
F**k the RNC. They don't represent me.
What a shallow thing to say.
Seriously considering? Seriously?
Aw, let La Lydia say what ever she may like. She is satisfying the lust patterns of her soul............ the same as we all do if we are honest enough to admit it.
He probably even likes the ladies, which would be a welcome change from Charlie's preferences.
Or are you saying that only homely, dorky and/or cheesey Republican men -- sadly, the vast majority -- are substantive enough to be worthy of support?
I’m sorry, but I can’t just take your word for it. I will need to see some proof. ;^)
Sorry. Let me rephrase:
Incredibly shallow.
Women's suffrage was a huge mistake.
If I knew how to post pictures, I would post one I have of him and his family. I suggest a google image search. I wanted to suggest that the “palin rule” about posting pictures when a story names a certain person be imposed for Rubio, but didn’t because I can’t post them myself.
And you didn't address my question about Gov. Palin.
Women's suffrage comment escalation:
"If you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman." -- Margaret Thatcher
I would like to see the whiplash in women's hands. -- Mark Twain
