NO.

We don’t do that on Free Republic. Ok bud.

When someone dies, we offer thoughts and prayers to their family. Because we have class. and we believe all fall short of the grace of God.

I know that was a very painfull time for the USA. But I am sure Mr McNamara felt the pain, just as Lyndon Johnson did, just as Richard Nixon did. Does anyone doubt that Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon LOVED this country ?. Bob McNamara doesn’t deserve hatred. God rest his soul. He served the United States of America. He was a patriot.

I’ll reserve comment. I hope he makes peace with many U.S. soldiers who went before him.

Sorry, disagree completely.

Some incompetence and wrongdoing deserves to see the light of day. A man’s death does not exonerate nor, in those extreme situations, should it be reason to in any way excuse or ignore these transgressions.

Johnson? The man was a socialist. I doubt that he loved this country, yes.

McNamara is responsible for too many deaths to be mourned. He came up with one of the worst war strategies in human history, a strategy that managed to be both incapable of winning and incapable of losing and thus turned the war into a meat grinder. He might have been a patriot, but the blood on his hands would make even Lady Macbeth cringe.

Saddam Hussein loved his country, so did Josef Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tung, and Ho Chi Minh, even Adolph Hitler. It didn't make them "feel pain" ... whether saints or monsters, people need to be judged for their actions despite what is BC (Biblical Correct). I am sorry for Robert S. McNamara's family but I don't grieve his death; he was one of the worst SECDEF's in history...second only to Simon Cameron. His and LBJ's decisions to suspend (limited warfare) instead of carrying on the successful "Rolling Thunder" (which Nixon mirrored in "Linebacker II" to force the N.V.A. regime to the peace table) resulted to stymie a winnable war and cost American lives.

What about the Sixty thousand killed during the Vietnam war? I hold LBJ and Robert McNamara responsible for the fiasco they created by expanding the war from 1963 to 1969.

No, I will not say “God rest his soul”. Please, read up on your history. Many of us here lived through or fought in the Vietnam war and do not need a lecture!

“What we still don’t understand is why you Americans stopped the bombing of Hanoi. You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to surrender! It was the same at the battles of TET. You defeated us! We knew it, and we thought you knew it. But we were elated to notice your media w as definitely helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. You had won!”

Good point. Allow me to rephrase:

“Bad man. Good death. Prayers and condolences to his family.”

Better, no?

McNamara never felt pain. Part of his problem too.

Laz is a long time Freeper and really doesn't need a short timer telling him what 'we' do on Free Republic. You're free to pretend that Robert McNamara was a great American patriot if you want to but I believe him to have been an arrogant, incompetent failure who has some of the blood of 58,000 American men killed in Viet Nam on his hands...LBJ has his share too.

I doubt very much that Lyndon Johnson loved this country. Johnson loved himself, money and power. He was a very poor man that got into politics and became a very, very rich man. Just like in Arkansas with the Clintons many people that opposed him ended up dead. Between him using Social Security to pay for his “great society” and using and killing young Americans to fight a war he didn’t have the guts to win because of political repercussions we are lucky we survived long enough for Carter and Obama to put the final nails in our coffin.

You can pray for him all you want ... but there are friends of mine that were obliterated because of his action and stupidity.

He has a lot of angry hands on him now ...

Ya, he does. He got lots of American solders killed with his ideas. Sorry. That is the way it is. And if you studied the war you would come up with the same conclusion. There will be a long line of vetrans to water his grave. He was an unconscious incompetent. He listened to no one. He had all the answers.

Now what if he was Tim McVeigh?

Or how about a predator such as John Couey who is a repeat sex offender who raped and murdered a little girl?

Do we still offer our thoughts and prayers to their families because we have class?

My father is a Vietnam vet, and many of his friends are on the wall because of McNamara’s moronic policies.

Screw McNamara.

I’d rather offer prayers and thoughts to the families of the tens of thousands of Americans as well as our allies who died in vain because of McNamara, Johnson and Congress.
