As speculation swirled that her decision was connected to a pending corruption investigation, Mrs Palin's lawyer issued a four-page letter warning legal action against bloggers and US publications that reprinted the allegations, which she strongly denies.
"To the extent several websites ... are now claiming as 'fact' that Governor Palin resigned because she is 'under federal investigation' for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation," said Thomas Van Flein, her lawyer, in a statement.
He also told the Anchorage Daily News that he was unaware of any criminal investigation involving Mrs Palin, an assertion supported by the local office of the FBI.
Mrs Palin's announcement on Friday that she will stand down in Alaska left many convinced that she is considering challenging for the White House in 2012.
At the weekend she indicated on the social networking website Facebook that she would assume a larger, national role after leaving office on July 26, more than a year before her first term as governor would have ended.
"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint," she wrote.
Calling the reaction to her announcement "predictable" the former Republican vice-presidential candidate said: "How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country. And though it's honourable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term ... for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."
Since her selection as Senator John McCain's running mate in August 2008, Mrs Palin has provoked a love or hate reaction. She has been regularly criticised in the mainstream media for combining inexperience

She generously shares credit for "driving Palin from office". And of course, the only reason Palin would leave, is that a really big rock is coming down the hill, and Palin wanted to scuttle out of the way .... oh, and so she can get more money out of the State's legal defense fund .... without being indicted for that .....

I’m glad to see this. I was thinking that she ought to throw some attack dogs at her detractors now that she’s going private and I see that she’s unleashed the hounds. Good. The next thing I’d like to see is her resignation from the republican party, considering they’ve treated her just as poorly as the dems have. I’m looking forward to the speech in which she announces the formation of a new conservative party and invites all conservatives and like-minded republicans to join and contribute. Might be the first time in my life I joined a political party. We’ll see what happens...

Much as I like Sarah, the USA jumped the financial shark a long time ago, and even she can’t save the ship from sinking. I think her resignation was a mistake.
