Russia hints it could block nuclear arms deal with US President Barack Obama

Russia has hinted it could walk away from a proposed nuclear arms deal with US President Barack Obama unless Washington shows 'restraint' over its plans to erect a contentious missile defence shield in Central Europe.

Just hours before President Barack Obama's arrival in Moscow for a visit considered pivotal to the future of east-west relations, Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President, signalled the potential for renewed discord between the two former Cold War adversaries.

Mr Medvedev said that Russia had no choice but to link the new treaty reducing nuclear stockpiles to the missile shields, which the Kremlin believes is part of a US plot to weaken Moscow's nuclear deterrent.

"We consider these issues are interconnected," he said. "If restraint and an ability to compromise is displayed, then we can agree on the basis of a new deal." Mr Medvedev's warning will dismay those who had hoped that the US and Russia, which would both benefit from smaller nuclear arsenals, could move quickly toward signing a new treaty.

During the two-day summit, which begins on Monday, the two leaders had been expected to sign a joint declaration agreeing to implement the pact by December, when they would then begin to decommission as much as half of their deployed nuclear warheads. But in a further blow to hopes for a breakthrough, a Russian foreign ministry source said that the document had not yet been completed, the Interfax News Agency reported.

Even so, by not demanding the unconditional abandonment of the missile shield project, Mr Medvedev has indicated that Russia may have tempered a position of intransigence that has characterised relations with the United States in recent years.

I wouldn’t worry...the whole Europe umbrella plan is going to be dissolved. There’s no real money for it...once we go to Stimulus 2.0 and the healthcare plan.

So, what will Obama get from the Soviet Union, er, I mean Russia, in return? Permission to go through one of their client states into Afghanistan? But we already had that, until Russia threatened to kick us out.

Quid pro quo, Obama, quid pro quo. And keep in mind that the Polish missile shield isn’t directed toward Russia anyway. So, will the Russians stop arming your Iranian pals in return?

This is like thieves demanding people take the locks off their doors.

It is purely defensive and is only activated if someone trespasses our safety.

And only a traitor would fight to have a missile-defense system discontinued and/or dismantled.

Yes, traitor.

Huh. I hope Russia makes DumbO look like the idiot he is.

NATO should be dissolved and should have been dissolved a while ago.

while I do not agree at all to dissolve NATO, I can see that these are becoming dangerous times to be an American.

Very dangerous times.
I have laid plans for my minor children to leave America quickly if that becomes prudent.

Obama will leave Europe to hang just to get his name in the history books as the one who got nukes out of the world when he really would only be getting AMERICAN nukes out and leave everyone of us vulnerable.

This is what happens when people vote an unknown in and it just so happens he is an effing sociopathic jerk.

If/when we are invaded by UN peace keepers or Venezuelan troops to put down the midwest food riots, will it then be ok with people on FreeRepublic to not pay income taxes? Or would I be a bad person if I stopped paying income taxes even then?

Get ready fro threat after threat - from the globes formerly biggest bully.

Because the BULLY on the corner just pegged the other guy’s leader as a pansy.

They will now push that pansy as far as they can until he stops them.

Which Zero will not do.

Why ? Because he’s totally convinced that the only reason the worlds is an unsafe place anyhow is because of America and their unfair belligerence. So he’s too busy trying to kiss their a$$es so they will no longer haste us any longer.

For a guy who claims he’s “from the streets” he sure doesn’t know squat about the law of the street when it comes to dealing with bullies.
