Why did Sarah Palin step down?
Theories abound. But some of the people closest to the Alaska governor say she wanted to regain control of a political script that slipped out of her hands the moment she burst onto the national stage. She also wanted to shield herself and her family from the attacks that seem to have been aimed permanently at them in the 311 days since Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced her as his running mate, according to some former campaign aides and other advisers who speak regularly with Palin or her husband, Todd.
The Sarah Palin who stood outside her Wasilla, Alaska, lakefront home Friday to surrender her term with 18 months remaining appeared vulnerable and anything but the pugnacious hockey mom and combative candidate whom Americans came to either adore or revile. The woman who said she would never blink suddenly...

Was there another speech that I missed?
Whatever.
This frees her up to defend herself AND work on behalf of conservatism.
This is why the left is STILL trying to ruin her. Still. But she can fight back now. It’s gonna be phun watching.
LOL! Cankles don’t lie! :)
I agree. She will never be president now. It’s over. The only remaining question is this. Is there some scandal about to break as the leftist media has been reporting or has Gov. Palin made a giant mistake by wanting to begin her presidential campaign early without finishing her term as governor (big mistake). I don’t know.
The Obamanites have been trying to peck her to death by bogus ethics complaints and vile media hate crimes. We will see if they have succeeded. In his first two elections to public office Obama destroyed his opposition early in the campaign. In the Democrat primary for state office, he had his opponent's candidacy thrown out with supposedly not enough legal signatures. In his candidacy for senator, he got the press to illegally open some divorce records, showing information which would likely be taken as a badge of honor for a Democrat, but is a death knell for a Republican.
If she thinks leaving politics will halt the attacks, she is gravely mistaken. For about two weeks, starting with her Convention speech, she had the Dims and MSM running scared. For a brief moment there, it looked as if Obama was not a sure thing after all. As payback for that, she will be hounded for the rest of her life. If anything, her best alternative was to stay in power. I guess that option is closed now as she will likely not be elected to anything ever again.
Getting your talking points from DemocraticUnderground and DailyKos, eh?
Stifle that kind of talk, noob!
She never suggested so. Not being governor, she will be able to fight back these attacks.
I think Sarah was smart to make this announcement on “Independence Day,” for, if we do not shake loose from the powers that be in both political parties, we are done. We, the people, need to reorganize into a third party and we need to do it now. In addition, no one I can think of in the recent past has suffered the vile and unrelenting attacks that Sarah Palin has suffered. She stated in her resignation speech that adults had verbally attacked her innocent baby boy. They just cannot stand the idea that she gave life to him. I am guessing that some of her harshest critics have dabbled in abortion themselves and, perhaps, do not want Sarah around reminding them of their own guilt.

Maybe you had bladder stones when writing your comment newbie?
Ev
I agree you mut be in to win it !
I think she would do far more good as a Republican-Conservative spokesperson, rather than a political candidate for national office.
This could set the stage for a 1994-esque take-over of both houses, and give some political focus to the SCOTUS appointments. She, on a daily basis, could take the wind out of the sails of Barry, David, and Rahm.
No talking points here...merely logic. Many of you twist yourself in knots to figure out how this is some grand scheme of Sarah’s to put her into the White House. I don’t see it that way. No sitting governor who quits to pursue higher office will be viewed as a serious presidential candidate. She made a promise to the people of Alaska and should not break it merely to run for the presidency. I don’t know why she did it. The rumors are out there...of course people lie all the time especially about Gov. Palin so we should wait and see.
I just don’t get it. If Sarah resigned to pursue higher office then I don’t understand her behavior. When you run for office, you make a promise to the people of your state. sorry, I can’t help looking at this logically. Also, we have been burned by our presidential candidates. Next time, I want a really good one.
You can answer your critics more from a position of power than when you have none at all. The governorship was just such a position. Not only did she disappoint a lot of Alaskans but I feel by her decision she threw herself under the bus politically speaking. Isn’t this what is wrong with conservatives in Washington? They give up too damn easily. Isn’t that what we have been saying for so long now and then this happens too? Come on people. Wake up for pete’s sake.

I agree that Palin was the only thing that made the McCain/Palin ticket work and that is why this decision of Palin’s I can’t help but feel was a huge mistake on her part.
