Palin resignation splits GOP
The Politico ^ | July 4, 2009 | Jonathan Martin

Sarah Palin’s jaw-dropping announcement that she is quitting her job as Alaska governor before finishing even her first term has divided Republican ranks and the wider political community in a very familiar fashion.

Many establishment GOP operatives and political commentators of various stripes were withering, both about the decision and the way she announced it—in a jittery, hyperkinetic news conference that rambled between self-congratulation and bitter accusations at the foes she says are eager to destroy her.

The performance, by these lights, adds credence to the claims of some associates that Palin—burned by the intense scrutiny on her and the crossfire that swirls around her—is so fed up that she's ready to get out of elective politics. Even if it's only the small stage of Alaska politics she hopes to escape, skeptics say Friday’s events also diminished and perhaps even demolished what was left of her viability as a 2012 presidential candiate.

But her defenders believed an unorthodox move, even if risky, has a clear logic and may only further increase her standing with conservatives who don’t care what establishment figures in or out of the GOP think. Leaving the governor’s office at the end of this month leaves her free to travel the country, command large speaking fees, and begin the process of rallying her devotees without pesky home-state opponents criticizing every move.

These varied reactions were an echo of the debates that have followed Palin every step since her nomination as John McCain’s running mate ten months ago—a surprise that turned out to be just the first of many surprises served up by one of the most colorful and polarizing American political figures in a generation.

Look Weston, I have no vested interest in destroying Palin. I wanted her to become President. What now? What happens when her family becomes a target when she runs to be President, or becomes President?

Is she going to cut and run again? Is she then going to do it for the good of the American people?

I have no idea who counseled her here, but they contributed to destroying her viability as a Presidential contender IMO.

If Reagan had been governor of Alaska, would have finished his final eighteen months in office.

You really can not say that with any certainty.

Temper my comments? I'll pass there Slick. And I need seniority to respond to someone who is asking for whom I voted as some silly test to prove that I'm a Conservative because I criticized Sarah Palin? That's a good one. Blind devotion to a politician will get you no where.

Feel free to read through all of my comments to see if I'm a troll before you spout off.

Not that it's any of your business but I didn't support anyone else until McCain won.

Well I did characterize it as quitting because I was being honest. The blind devotion to Palin in response is troubling to say the least. She gave a commitment to the voters of Alaska which she did not fulfill. Plain and simple. Her word means nothing at this point and she has very little chance now on the national stage. She will get crucified for quitting 2 years and 7 months in her term. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.

“The election was lost...”

The election was lost when McCain suspended his campaign to go back to DC and support Bush, Obama with the TARP bailout.

He was at that moment no longer a “maverick.”

I agree with your comments.

It’s a depressing time to be a Conservative, that’s for sure.

Who said she has cut and run?
Seems to me she has turned to face the problems/head on and now the cowards are scared.

Time will tell. Only God knows the future. We are all speculators this side of heaven.

You really can not say that with any certainty.

Oh yes I can. Get real.

Reagan would have understood that quitting with barely eighteen months to go would have simply given his enemies the biggest political victory they could have hoped for.

He would have at least completed that first term. Period.

[S]he planned and mapped out a strategy to have the state continue with her people firmly in charge and able to govern without the constant attacks and distractions her haters have heaped upon her. The basic point is here, she knows what she's doing, and she's doing it her way.

Yes, that is correct.

The New Soviet Men cannot acknowledge that.

it is entirely possible that she will annihilate all opponents in Iowa and New Hampshire. Then she has a real shot at the nomination. These events are hard to predict this far out.

I would not want to be the guy advising Romney on how to win Iowa. “No ideas boss!”

That Ames, IA straw poll is only 25 months away.

I recently saw what I would call a Northern VA “valleygirl” wearing a Politico T’Shirt. She was an attractive blond twenty something precocuppied on her cell phone at the time and if I remember correctly, the conversation (at least on one end) was beyond banal and ridiculously stupid - a perfect testament to our current state. ‘Nuff said.

I don’t consider letting someone cause you to resign, a victory. She is stepping down from being Governor. And you refer to this as turning to face the problems head on?

Why would the cowards be scared? This view baffles me, but what the hey.

I appreciate the comments.

NO, she didn’t fail her voters...she did a very good job for them until she was attacked and now she’s stepping aside for somebody who give their full attention to governing Alaska...

That’s smart, that’s brave, and the sign of a good politician. It’s been so long since the US has had even a sniff of a good politician, it seems nobody recognizes one.

How sad.

My point is and I expect to hear an answer to this!
Just exactly who was it that caused her to step down?
10% unemployment .....the current socialist agenda...world events ....Israel? I think that all battles are not best served at your enemys pleasure so in other words if you hear that your enemy is coming to kill you in the morning you have a duty to get up and kill your enemy first !

Fascinating precedent... resign your office just as soon as you decide you’re not going to run again?

You heard her speech today. She told you why she was stepping down. She told you the reasons, and what groups influenced it.
