SAN DIEGO -- President Obama recently reignited the immigration debate when he told reporters that congressional leaders of both parties were ready to "actively get something done and not put it off until a year, two years, three years, five years from now, but to start working on this thing right now."
In the months ahead, keep an eye on two things: the calendar and the issue of guest workers.
The calendar: "Right now" might not be soon enough. The conventional wisdom is that the longer Obama waits, the harder it will be to pass any immigration reform legislation. One immigration activist I spoke with even had a deadline in mind: March 2010. Congress has to discuss the bill this fall, he said, and pass it no later than next spring. His thinking -- and that of many others -- is that the 2010 midterm elections might cut into the Democratic majority in Congress, and then the chance for immigration reform could slip away.
The flaw with such reasoning is that it assumes Republicans are the main obstacle to reform, and that, conversely, Democrats must be the main facilitators. Yet Republicans are under a lot of pressure from business groups to fix the immigration system so companies can more easily hire workers. As for Democrats, they were the ones carrying the ball in 2007, the last time Congress fumbled the chance at reform.
. . . . .
Even immigration moderates such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have drawn a line in the sand and assured the White House that if guest workers aren't part of the final bill, they won't support it.

Barf!
What IS it with mcCain and graham? One speaks, the other moves his mouth. Lord, spare us the both of them, PLEASE!
Juan McCain and Lindsey Grahamnesty. Two of the damnedest traitors in Congress.
Why are they rehashing this again?
Da One isnt gonna cross the unions. McKook and Flimsy could actually work to our advantage for a change by refusing to support a bill tailor made to please the WH’s union thugs.
GUEST WORKERS!!!!!!!!!!! When the unemployment is 9.5% and rising? McCain wasn’t joking when he said he didn’t understand economics, he is so far out of touch with the common man — being married to an heiress may do that to you.
vaudine
Both McCain and Graham need to be tarred and feathered and sent back to their states. Screw them.
In this instance it might be closer to Vichy Swish.
I’m tapped out on both these guys. At one time I thought Graham was a decent sort, back around the time of the impeachement. Sorry to see him go south.
McStain, haven’t had any use for him after the Keating Five situation.
“Oh I didn’t want to attend those meetings for Keating, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
Yeah John, you twit.
I can’t stand either one of them.
He (John McCain) supported an amnesty program in 2003, and most recently "comprehensive immigration reform" which many (especially on the right) considered just another form of amnesty. Now, in the thick of the primary season, McCain has said he "gets it," and "now understands that we need to secure the border" before any sort of immigration reform is enacted.
But how has John demonstrated that he "gets it"? By hiring open borders advocate Juan Hernandez as one of his advisors!
Hernandez stated in 2001 that Mexican immigrants (presumably legal and illegal) will think Mexico first I want em all to think Mexico first.
Then there's Juan's defense of Mexican bus drivers who transport illegals across the border and his promotion of letting illegals open bank accounts.
I could say some things ..but I’m all Mexico’d out....bunch of counter-dependent children....perpetual whiners and ingrates....
The real unemployment (U6) rate rose to 16.5% in June.
This number includes unemployed people from several categories left out of U3 rate, which is the number the media and government push.
U6 includes categories such as people unemployed for so long their unemployment benefits have run out and they are so discouraged they have given up looking for a job, while U3 does not.
How can you say that? McCain is a war hero. He deserves respect. He is honorable. He is...
Well, just ask him. Or, rather Don't ask McCain lest you be tossed out.
“Juan McCain and Lindsey Grahamnesty. Two of the damnedest traitors in Congress.”
