The death of a major cultural figure is always a time for taking stock.
This is true in part because an entire generation, now aging, helped to create their self-image in the reflection of that figure - and thus that individual represents a powerful source of nostalgia. At the same time, subsequent generations, who may have never seen that figure in his or her prime, still recognize him or her as emblematic of an era now gone, but perhaps better than the present.
So it is with Michael Jackson. Given what we already know about what kind of shape the singer was in when he died - indeed, he may not have even been able to sing anymore - his exit just before what now looks like a catastrophic 50-performance comeback at the O2 Arena outside London - begins to look like what cynics would call a good career move....

The “real” MJ to me is the one of Thriller-era and prior.

MJ was even weird when Thriller came out. He stopped being MJ after “Off the Wall.”

Off the Wall
The title was a warning.

Did this idiot see the rehearsal footage of Michael both singing and dancing? A rehearsal where the back-up dancers were huffing and puffing while Jackson looked strong and commanding. So much for the stories about him being in a wheelchair, unable to stand.
I guess taking one final shot at him is the new black.

He was strange, but hadn’t fallen full-force into Freakville yet.

I suspect the bizarre external morphing of MJ that happened after the "Off the Wall" album cover was shot was a manifestation of his long-existing internal contortions.

The last known picture of a "normal" Michael Jackson
For this I blame his father. That guy's a sicko.
(Actually, I was told a few years ago here on FR that even in the shot above, MJ had some nose work done. He used to have a really wide schnozz.)

I don’t know how they will make a Michael Jackson movie. Who would play him? I mean, Vincent Price is dead!

I’ve heard his many plastic surgeries was to dissolve his resemblance to his father - in many early shots, he did look a lot like him.

Glad to see you go Michael, good riddance.
Our young boys are safer now that you are gone.

I liked MJ in the Jackson Five days. I never bought an album, but liked the music. After he went solo I’d change the station.

I think to be not just a star but a “superstar” you have to be weird. You have to come across as not like anyone else. You have to be elusive and always in costume. People don’t “worship” people that are like them.

Do we know whether Michael was singing or lip syncing in that clip?
