First the mass protests were suppressed by force, then came the mass arrests.
Three weeks after Iran's disputed presidential election, scores - possibly hundreds - of opposition supporters and prominent reformists remain in prison.
Their families have had little or no information about their fate.
Most are too worried to speak to the press now. They describe a climate of terror in Tehran.
But I met one woman at her university here in England who wanted to tell me what had happened to her husband. She only asked me not to use their real names.
Ali, as I will call him, is an opposition activist who worked for the presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, at the elections. He was arrested in Tehran two weeks ago, and disappeared.
"It was just a terrible moment. I could not stop crying," Zahra told me.
"I just thought, why should he be in jail? What was wrong with what we did in Tehran? It was the basic right of all Iranians to take part in the election and we did the same."

It’s too late for “fears.” These poor people, thrown to the wolves by Herr Obama, are dead as doornails. I only hope they don’t suffer too much.
I think maybe you are right. They may be alive , but I doubt it.
They’re sufferring a lot.....
Arrested, beaten and raped: an Iran protester’s tale

I am very distressed by this.
Congress held a minute of silence (at the request of Jesse Jackson Jr) because the idiot, drug-addled Michael Jackson had finally done himself in. I just heard about this today and I couldn’t believe it.
Meanwhile, Congress is totally unconcerned with the suffering and death of people who, even leaving aside the justice of their cause, could have been our allies and might have changed the world had they gotten some support.
Obama is crazy and hates us, and I’m starting to think our legislature is crazy too - and doesn’t hate us, but doesn’t care about us or the rest of the world, either. They’re busy “celebrating” the memory of a nutty has-been performer.
I cried when I read that Guardian article.
I don’t know how many of the videos of recent beatings you’ve watched - I’ve seen too many. Innocent people just walking down the street being harrassed and then when they’re trying to just walk away, they’re beaten to the ground, kicked and then drug off somewhere - all because they walked down the wrong street at the wrong time.
Not that this brutal thuggery is anything new, it’s just happening on a grander scale and being reported worldwide via the internet.
The people need help. The U.S. has helped solidarity movements, we’ve helped E. European countries, we know how to do this. Obama just needs to give the word.
