Mullah Nazir makes conditional peace offer
The Nation ^ | July 03, 2009 | Shehzada Wazir

WANA - Taliban local commander Mullah Nazir has offered to remain peaceful if the government does not extend military operation against militants up to Wana region. The offer was made through a traditional Jirga of Ahmadzai (Wazir) tribe yesterday. Leading tribal elders from all sub-tribes of Ahmadzai tribe Thursday met Political Agent Syed Shahab Ali Shah in his office.

Earlier, the Jirga members had held a detailed meeting with Mullah Nazir. Nazir assured the Jirga to remain peaceful for a period of three months.

Mullah Nazir is one of three top militant commanders of the area and his decision could be considered as a severe blow to Baitullah Mehsud.

This is very good news. Mullah Omar sent a three man delegation last week to urge Nazir and Gul Bahadur to stay united with Baitullah Mehsud against the coming Paki offensive. This takes about a third of the Paki Taliban out of the fight.

The Wazir and Mehsud tribes have been in conflict for a decade. Mullah Nazir, a Wazir, is under pressure from the Ahmadzai Wazir tribes not to drag Baitullah Mehsud's war to their area.

It also appears that Gul Bahadur's Taliban faction has cut a deal with the Paki Army to focus on attacks in Afghanistan and stay out of the fight also. That would be another quarter of the Taliban out of the Paki fight.

Obviously, that means more fighting for our American troops. We have to accept that in order to bolster the Paki's new found courage to attack Baitullah. BTW, that courage should be greatly elevated by the body armor and kevlar helmets we are rushing to the Paki's.

Hopefully with the Marines in Helmand, and the Paki offensive against Baitullah, this will be a turning point against the Taliban and al Qaeda during this summer's fighting season.

Time and time again, the Taliban has proven that there can be no negotiating with terrorists or extremist religious militants. Any and all such negotiations have not been upheld. The Taliban is simply buying time and any one thinking otherwise will again be proven wrong.

Good point, LOL.

The "Taliban" are about as organized as a herd of cats. The term is really a misnomer for Pahktun tribes that have quarreled and fought with each other and any outsiders forever.

The only thing that can be depended on is their mistrust of everyone outside their own sub tribes, their greed, and talent at saving their own hides. They will sell out on each other if there is a buck in it or self-preservation.

The Wazirs of N Waziristan see an opportunity to reclaim all of Waziristan away from the Mehsuds of S Waziristan, whom they see as squatters. That's why they are in cahoots with the Paki Army.

Many years ago the Wazirs allowed the Mehsuds to settle in Waziristan as migrant workers. The Mehsuds out-bred the Wazirs, took over large areas, brought in al Qaeda and the Uzbek-Chechen drug thugs and now won't leave. A lesson for us all......

The word of The Taliban, like the promise of all radical Islam, like the word of North Korea or your typical street thug is pretty much useless.

They’re not in a position to make deals. It’s to the point that our military controls what they can and can not do. The minute you start making deals with these type of people you will loose eventually......or at least be back fighting them later.

It is just the constant manuevering of the Pahktun tribes, nothing more. Any "deal" ever struck will be constantly changed.

Interestingly, and not reported is that this "deal" has only a three month timer. Then the haggling and infighting and double-dealing starts all over again, if it lasts that long.

As tempting as the offer sounds you can’t negotiate with religious fanatics. Besides the likely possibility Mullah Omar could be killed 1 week after any agreement the Koran has authorized these varmints to lie.
