Now Barack Obama and his family plan to spend some time next month on the glamorous island.

Just off Cape Cod in New England, the island is where America's Democratic elite comes to let its hair down each summer, enjoying "clambakes" on the beach, garden parties, sailing and golf. It has long been a favourite haunt of Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, who is now the US secretary of state.

I know we all care about the United States Marines who are fighting and defeating the Taliban in southern Afghanistan right now. From the news reports we're getting, the fighting is very intense.

I hope that the Commander-in-Chief isn't so busy enjoying his holiday on Martha's Vineyard that he forgets those who put their lives on the line so we can be free. You'd think that the President would hesitate to take time off work while such a battle is underway.

President Lincoln used to sleep in the White House telegraph room so he could get news about ongoing battles immediately.
