The Washington Times ^ | July 3, 2009 | Editorial

The tea party movement has become more than a one-time tax protest. The grass-roots political crusade is growing and expanding. This popular uprising against oppressive big government is in the best tradition of the American independence movement that we are celebrating this weekend.

This is a tribute to our flag: American the Beautiful sung by Elvis Presley: a stunning tribute. Please listen and pass it on.

On Saturday July 4th I’m planning to attend my first and hopefully not my last public demonstration against our government’s out of control spending. I just learned of a tea party in Newton NJ which is only 20 minutes from me. I feel very strong that this movement is gaining big momentum and that this Obama administration needs to be stopped, and that includes all of our legistlators as well. To my great disbelief, my local Republican congressman, Leonard Lance voted for this cap and trade plan this week and I was appalled. That convinced me that they are all out for themselves dealing and wheeling and ‘the hell’, with serving the people who had sent them to Washington to represent us. I’m confident that the tide is turning and that I am part of an ever growing silent majority that is becoming more and more determined to take our country back.

NJ is in a good position to sell carbon credits vs buying them because a good portion of their power is through nuclear generation. Both the East and West coast are in a more favorable position. The central portion of the US are the ones that are screwed, but eventually everyone will share in the misery, they just don’t realize it yet.

Here’s the real problem. We really haven’t built any Nuclear power plants in the US on the scale that we should have been for the last 3 decades. Reason being.. cost, concerns about safety, handling nuclear waste and the high cost of construction. The nuclear regulatory commission doesn’t make this process any easier or less expensive. There has not really been a motivation on the part of the power industry to build them. Oil has been relatively cheap and financial risk is not shared equally between producer and consumer during the construction phase due to regulatory restraints. If these regulatory restraints were lifted and financial risk was evenly spread, we’d be much more energy independent today. Aside from that, it takes 10 years from regulatory filling and compliance to completing the construction.

The problem with this CAP and BS legislation now is that any money that could go for new construction will be sucked up and split between the have states, the brokers, and the Government. No new construction on clean energy in the central US where it’s needed most, no change in CO2 emissions, and definitely no new jobs.

This is a horrible way to treat our Countrymen.

A long time friend of mine from Jersey, Rick, and a Catholic Republican voted for Obama. I asked him why and he became angry. I asked Rick about social issues that Obama supported than conflicted with his Catholic faith, and I asked him about economic issues that Obama held that were opposite of what Rick had always stood for.

End the end Rick became abusive, refused to discuss the why’s or logic of his vote and played the race card. Since I am from the South I must be a racist for not agreeing with Rick. So ended a long time friendship.

This 4th will be my 2nd Tea Party here in Georgia. On April 15th I was honored to have stood beside people of all races and ages. I sent Rick pictures but he never reponded.

I admire you for stepping over the silence barrier (never discuss politics or religion) and telling it as it is. Good for you!

As a Catholic, it saddens me that your friend, Rick, is so blind. As you said - they have no answers as to why they voted for him. I confess to being puzzled by it myself. I hope your friend Rick - and all “Christians” who voted for Obama, will wake up.

My experience has been the same as yours; That is, when they are challenged on why they voted for him, they get defensive and angry. Why? Why not just answer?

I don’t understand.

I tried for months to get him to answer why. He refused to listen or discuss the issue.

I know many Southern Baptists that voted for OBama too. They are in the same boat as Rick when it comes to explaining their vote. I even know preachers that are Pro-Life that voted for Obama. I have yet to ask them to explain.

I honestly think Obama is a media star to many folks and they didn't and still don't care he's destroying our country.

Unfortunately this is a good example as to why people who make a mistake don't always want to own up to it, and say or do whatever they think they need to do to justify their action.

According to one of the links you provided, there are OVER 1450 cities hosting Tea Parties this weekend!!

That’s amazing. Anybody have the stats handy from April 15th? It would be neat to see how the movement has grown.
