Privately-owned Chinese low-cost carrier Spring Airlines has spoken to Airbus about adding standing-seats on its Airbus A320s so it can have 40% more passengers on board.
Zhang Wuan, an official at the Shanghai airline who works closely with the CEO, says: "We are planning to have standing seats" and have had "initial discussions with the Airbus side to see if the safety question can be" addressed.
"We want to have it so more people can afford to fly," says Zhang, adding that the carrier estimates it can fit 40% more passengers on board its A320s.
The standing seats will reportedly look like a bar stool and have a safety strap.
Zhang says Spring today has 13 aircraft but is adding two or three more this year.
If that’s first class, I’d hate to see tourist.
Wow, the loads on those bases would be tremendous with a
moment arm that long.
Only in China. As a reference, if the stewardess asks if you prefer chicken or fish, chicken means dog and fish means rat.
Wow, that would suck.
I hope Delta doesn’t see this :-)
The claustrophobe in me wants to hyperventilate after reading this.
Yes. One of my sons travels to China every once in a while to talk to bankers. He really enjoys interesting experiences, but had some pretty mixed feelings about the food.
The Chinese traditionally have one of the world’s greatest cuisines, but that isn’t necessarily what you get.
American and USscareways already beat them to this.
Lordy, I spend every minute possible standing on trans Pacific flights with Chinese carriers anyway.
The Fareed Zakarias of the world seem to pleasure themselves at the thought of China assuming world domination in the near future.
The thought does not please me at all. Not one bit. I would not want to live in that world.
My sister acts as a liaison for UBS Asia division and she also has mixed feelings about China..especially the food. She loves Shanghai but detests Beijing. She describes Beijing as the “Detroit of Asia” (ouch).
Vely effliciant
Recently I was joking with friends that the next step in air travel is that you step on to a conveyor belt and are automatically “relaxed” or anesthetized with an injection to put you to sleep and are shoved into a tube and packed into a seatless cabin like a sardine for the flight.
Why don't they just weigh you and take your cubic dimensions and charge you like a UPS or FedEx package by the cubic inches you fill or consume?
A very wordly and well traveled friend of mine that has been to China says that the food she had there was the worst. She doesn’t want to go back. Hated it.
And folding chairs to put in the isle and even more crash victims could be hauled around. And what about that wasted overhead space? A few hammocks there would add even more sardines to the can.
Such a deal!
Considering the danger of blood clots, i.e. Deep Vein Thrombosis, standing might be safer than sitting.
I’m thinking they just knock you out at check in, load you
into a capsule, stack and pack, fly, unload and recover.
Why they could even take out the restrooms and kitchens!
