The nation's jobless rate scored its biggest year-to-year June increase in four decades, losing 6.1 million jobs in one year's time, a nearly 70 percent spike, a FOXNews.com analysis of labor statistics shows.
The jobless rate leapt to 9.5 percent from 5.6 percent between June 2008 and June 2009, a 3.9 percent spread that matched April and May yearly differences and tie for the highest yearly percentage spread since May 1974-1975.
In May 2009, 14.5 million people were unemployed -- 6 million more than one year earlier. The jobless rate during that time leapt to 9.4 percent from 5.5 percent, a 71 percent increase in the unemployment rate.
In April, 13.7 million people were unemployed, 6.1 million more than the previous April. The increase to 8.9 percent in April 2009 from 5.0 percent in April 2008 represented a nearly 80 percent annual increase in unemployment.

So much stimulus, so little jobs...
I was off by .5% :(
(I was betting on ~10%)
I live near an aircraft manufacturing plant and must drive to work through several other aircraft manufacturing plants. (Wichita)
Driving to work has been a total breeze as of late, now that I think about it. What used to take nearly a half hour or more now takes merely 10 minutes if I get all green lights.
BO is a disaster...wonder how long he’ll remain in office? His psyche can’t take it...

How’s that Obama “Hope and Change” working out for you voters?
OBama’s commie plan is on track. Nobody stopping him. Watching the country go down the memory hole.
(IF POSSIBLE) Forget who is in office.
Wouldn’t we be better served if we stated that OVER 90% of the citizens of this great land are employed?
Like they use the stat 30%+- of auto accidents are cause by drunk drivers.
Aren’t the 70% that aren’t drunk more of a problem????
what do you mean??? The POTUS said the stimulus is working! You mean he lied to us???? /sar
Well yes, but we’re focusing on the negative job stat to drive up another stat: wussybama’s dissaproval numbers.
It’s ridiculous to say we were in a recession in June 2008 with an unemployment rate of 5.6%.
Yeah, that would be better.
I was just dissapointed about being so close and, yet, so far away.
For those of us who have lost jobs (or spouse lost job), it’s 100%.
Sorry for your dilemma
but....
I personally have NEVER been out of a job any longer than I wanted to be.
Have never had to resort to becoming a dishwasher or busboy or Mickey D’s helper but-IMNSHO- all of the cited are much better than being on the ‘dole’ or standing on an off ramp with a tin can and ‘phony sign’, (BTW if you are out there with a homeless, VN Vet sign please upgrade. Not many 35 year old VN Vets out there anymore).
If it comes to eating or having a place to live, show me where the kitchen is...I would think if one went in and presented his position, with the understanding that once things turned around you would be gone a lot of the ‘bosses’ are quite sympathetic.
In my asphalt days I would hire (when needed) whoever and have put a ‘lot’ of friends to work, knowing it was temporary.
NOT a good approach is sleeping in till noon, looking for a couple of hours and saying there is ‘nothing out there’.
The hours are not convenient, but go to the airport and inquire into delivering lost bags, you can normally name your own shift and believe me if you speak English, have an insured vehicle and show up, you have a leg up on the job.
Being persistent also works, if they tell you they aren’t hiring, don’t take that as a final answer.
I realize you can no longer say “Tell you what, I will work a week for you and if you don’t like the results or see a potential, we will just shake hands and I will walk away”
but you do have to sell yourself. Then again, today the person you will work for doesn’t even have a say in the process, which is now left up to the HHS(?) or front desk secretary with a job app....
Lots of stuff out there, just not always what we desire....
the old term “Pick $—t with the chickens comes to mind.”
I appreciate your comments. In my husband’s case, he is a highly qualified accountant, but due to his age (58), nobody will even interview him.
We have no intention of going on the dole. I have an obligation that is taking up my time for next week, but as soon as that is finished, I intend to start looking for something.. anything. There is also the problem of companies not wanting to hire older workers due to health insurance costs, but I will have to take what I can get.
Wish I had become a nurse. *sigh*
But.....but.....but I thoughtBush caused all this well over a year ago. I mean....surely that 5% or so unemployment rate of a year ago could not be stopped no matter how hard the mighty messiah worked to stop it!!!
I have an idea for a political cartoon: First frame, skinny Ostammer trying to stop a ginormous snowball called “unemployment” that is hurtling down a steep mountain at breakneck speed. Second frame, it passes him by, doesn’t run him over, just keeps going getting larger and headed for all manner of factories and industries in its path. Third frame, ostammer is standing there grinning at a newspaper headline about his approval rating.
