Governor’s Visit to Mistress Didn’t Improperly Use Public Funds

A review of travel and financial records showed that Gov. Mark Sanford did not spend public money improperly when he visited his mistress, the chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Reginald Lloyd, said this afternoon...

Mr. Lloyd said that between an economic development trip to Brazil and Argentina a year ago, which is when the governor said the affair turned sexual, and the recent visit, Mr. Sanford saw the mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, three times in New York, on trips that had been paid for by either the governor himself or a third party.

In one case, Mr. Lloyd said, an overseas trip paid for by the Republican Governor’s Association, of which Mr. Sanford was the chairman, included a stop in New York. In another, he said, Mr. Sanford visited Washington on a trip paid for by the Republican National Committee, and paid out of pocket to go from there to New York.

Mr. Lloyd said the governor had cooperated with the review and it was not a criminal investigation. There is no evidence that Mr. Sanford violated any law, Mr. Lloyd said.

Also today, Mr. Sanford’s wife, Jenny, issued a new statement saying that while her husband’s actions were “inexcusable,” she was willing to forgive him ...

“Mark showed a lack of judgment in his recent actions as governor,” he said. “However, his far more egregious offenses were committed against God, the institutions of marriage and family, our boys and me. ...

Mr. Sanford’s admission of an affair has apparently cost him a book deal. He had a contract to write about fiscal responsibility for Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Group USA.

In a statement, Adrian Zackheim, Sentinel’s publisher, said the company had agreed to release Mr. Sanford from his contract by “a mutual decision.”

Even if the trips were kosher, methinks he's a bit too flakey.

His gravest SIN was in being a REPUBLICAN. This ‘affair’, if by a Democrat, is easily worth 750,000 adoring votes.
